Joe McGreer, 65, well known farmer, cattle feeder and interested in the Coburg elevator, died at 9 o'clock Friday night at his home six miles southwest of Red Oak in West township. Bishop, Zearl Harding, Thos. Birbeck, George Bruce, and Luther Hanson. Gaylord Ackles sang a solo and Mr. Ackles and and Mrs. L. W. Hughes sang a duet during the service with Miss Ada Withrow accompianist. Ladies in charge of the floral offering were Mrs. John Perkins and Mrs. George Bruce. Burial was in the Salem cemetery southwest of Red Oak in West Township. Came Here in 1872 Joseph Newton McGreer was born at Muscatine, IA June 17, 1871, a son of Mr. and Mrs. William A. McGreer. He came to Montgomery county when a child one year old and had lived on the farm where he died and a farm across the road all his life. When he grew to manhood he followed farming and later years became interested with his brothers in extensive cattle feeding. March 20, 1912, he was married to Laura E. Petersonin Red Oak. They had no children. When a young man he joined the Methodist church at Coburg. He was always interested in the welfare of the immediate locality in which he lived and in Montgomery county affairs.For many years he served as a justice of the peace in West township and as township clerk. In the early day he promoted the purchase of a tract of land to be used for cemetery purposes in his township and the cemetery was given the name of Salem cemetery. He was buried in the cemetery of which he was the orignator. Was Baseball Fan When he was a young man, Joe McGreer was greatly interested in good clean sports, and especially baseball. He gained considerable reputation as a baseball player. Because of his ability he was often sought by southwestern Iowa teams. In later years he, with his brothers became so extensively engaged in live stock feeding that land had been leased in Missouri for the purpose of feeding in connection with farm lands owned in and around Coburg. Joe McGreer wax a democrat in politics although he never took an active part because of his other duties as a business farmer. Leaves Widow Besides his widow, Mrs Laura McGreer, he is survived by three sisters and two brothers, Mrs Ella Thatcher, of Brush Colo.; Mrs Lizzie Frank, of Grant, Nebr.; Mrs. Emma Brooks, of Empooria, Kas,; Frank McGreer and J.M. (Bud) McGreer, of Red Oak.
