From the Sonoma Daily Democrat we gather the following particulars of the death of Joseph O. Boggs, at Santa Rosa, on the morning of last Thursday. He had been stopping for several days at the residence of J.M. White, and often complained of feeling badly, attributing this to dyspepsia, from which he suffered a great deal. He was said to be naturally of a despondent disposition, his mind dwelling much on his disease, and also on financial troubles. He retired on Wednesday night at about ten o'clock and, not coming to breakfast when called next morning, his room was opened and he was found on his back in bed with several gashes cut in his throat and an open pocket knife firmly clasped in his left hand. Two phials wore found in a chair near his bedside. Physicians, upon examination, found an incision on the right side of his neck two inches below the lobe of the right ear, extending downward and forward five and one-half inches in length. There were also six other incisions in the neck, five of them cutting the larnyx, being only short cuts or stabs. The large out severed the superficial muscles of the right side of the neck, anteriorly, also nearly severing the jugular vein and trachea. Of the two phials found by his bedside one once contained laudanum, but a physician said the deceased was not under the effects of it or any other drug at the time he committed the terrible act. A Coroner's jury was summoned and rendered the following verdict: "We the jury summoned by John Brown, J.P., in and for Sonoma county, to inquire into the cause of the death Joseph O. Boggs, do find that he is a native of Missouri, between 33 and 31 years of age, and that he came to his death by wounds inflicted upon himself, cut with a common pocket knife upon the right side of his nook, on the night of the 19th day of February, 1879, at the residence of J.M. White in the city of Santa Rosa, County of Sonoma. We also find that about 8 o'clock last night the deceased purchased an ounce phial of laudanum at a drugstore in this city, and from remarks that were made to the clerk who put it up for him, to the effect that it would put a man out of the way quick, shows to our mind that he had suicidal intentions. We also find that the cause of suicide was from long sickness, depression of spirits and financial troubles, of which the sickness was dyspepsia. (Signed) Will Acton, Wm. Prindle, A. Shepherd, Robert McGeorge, J.A. Linville, A.W. Davidson, V.L. Fortson, T.M. Baugh and James Martin. The deceased was a member of Santa Rosa Lodge No. 53 I.O.O.F., and leaves a wife and two children. The sad affair cast a gloom over the whole community, as Mr. Boggs was well known and was acknowledged by all to be the soul of honesty and straightforwardness. His body was brought to Napa Friday evening, and was committed to Tulocay, Saturday afternoon. The funeral took place from the residence of his brother, A.G. Boggs, Rev. W.J. Maclay officiating.
