Read More	Waterville Telegraph, April 21, 1893 OBITUARY It is our painful duty to announce the demise of one of our most respected citizens, Joseph R. Staley, who departed this life on the morning of Thursday, the 13th inst., in the sixty-second year of his age. A friend who for years has known Mr. Staley, has favored us with the following which we think will be read with interested by many of his surviving friends and relatives: Mr. Staley was born in Allegheny county, Pa., Dec. 1st, 1831. His father was born in 1798, died in 1867, his mother who survived his father, died about two years ago in her ninety-second year. The family consisted of nine sons and two daughters; out of the eleven only five are now living, three sons and two daughters. Notice of the death of one of his brothers was received during his (Mr. Staley's) late illness. Mr. Staley, though eligible, was not called upon to go to the iron during the rebellion of 61-65, but the family was well represented, as out of the nine sons seven were enlisted in the army and took their part with the boys in blue in the defense of the nation. Two of them were made prisoners in the Andersonville prison, where one died, and the other is supposed to have succumbed from the effects of the confinement, as no trace of him has ever since been found. Mr. Staley moved to the west during the war. For some time he has an interest in what was known as the Edwards mill, about three miles west of Waterville. In 1868 he was united in marriage to Laura, third daughter of Mr. George Sleppy, Wilksbarra, Pa., who survives him. The same year he homesteaded the quarter section of land which has been his domicile ever since. Their family has consisted of two boys and three girls. One boy and two girls died in infancy. Two, Walter, now proprietor and principal of the Capital Business College, Salem, Oregon, and Edith, who is still at home, still survive. Mr. Staley, although never at any time robust, enjoyed uniformly good health, until about Christmas last, when he was taken with a pain in the stomach which was not thought at first to be serious. Consulting with his medical advisor, who prescribed for him what was thought would give him relief, but which failed to meet the expectations, the pain becoming daily worse, he was compelled about the middle of January to take to his bed from which he never again arose. In spite of all that the best medical skill could do, he showed indicates of failing strength from day to day, and early in March fresh and unexpected complications began to manifest themselves, which seemed to battle every effort to counteract it. It soon became apparent that it was simply a question as to how long his remaining strength could resist the inroads of the deadly disease with which he was contending. At length the end came. Forced to give up the unequal struggle, he quietly breathed his last. The end was peace. During the period of his illness he suffered often a great deal of pain, which he endured with exemplary courage and Christian fortitude. He received all the attention and care which kind hearts and willing hands could bestow, for which he always seemed so grateful, and never once was heard to fret or utter a complaint. His kind hearted and skillful physician did all that could be done to alleviate his suffering and restore him to his wonted health, but it was beyond all human skill. A higher power had otherwise determined on the removal of Mr. Staley from our midst. We feel that the community has lost one of its best members, who was in many respects a model man, a good neighbor, friend, and a wise counselor, exact in all things, but never guilty of over-reacting or taking advantage of any one who might be in his power. Temperate in all things, we never knew him to use alcoholic liquors in any shape or form. Previous to his marriage he used tobacco in small quantities; after his marriage he forever discarded it as a pernicious, low, mean, dirty habit. In all our intercourse with him we never heard an unbecoming word proceed from his lips. Punctuality was one of his habitual characteristics; he never failed in keeping his appointments and always up to time. For seventeen years he held the office of clerk or director of the school board in the district to the entire satisfaction of every one, and was also secretary to the board of trustees of the cemetery east of the school house from its inception until his death. In politics he as a consistent and honest Republican. Besides being a good neighbor, he was also a kind husband and a loving and indulgent father. As a counselor, the estimation in which he was held was often exemplified, as in the event of any difference amongst neighbors, "Let us refer it to Mr. Staley." who was often their court of appeals, and from his clear perception, his well balanced mind and downright honesty, his decisions generally gave entire satisfaction. He did not pretend to know much of law as lawyers do, but he was a good judge in equity, and recommended the settling of disputations without going before the judiciary. A recommendation which he always practiced himself as only once had he a case in court. In respect to his religious views, he was not given to parading them before others. Some might think that on this all-important subject he was too reticent, but it was not his nature to be sounding his own praise abroad. He disliked everything in the shape of the mere emotional, or nervous excitement in the matter of religion; his intelligence, good sense and taste was against it. He was no ignoramus in these matters. He had been taught to read and study the scriptures from his boyhood and was well versed in sacred lore. His parents were staunch Presbyterians and he was baptized as a member in that church, of which his father held the office of ruling elder up to the time of his death.
