Born May 6, 1929 in Leonardtown, MD, he was the son of the late James Maguire and Helen Marie Barrett Mattingly. He is survived by his wife Nancy Lee Thompson Mattingly, six daughters, Susan Mattingly of Hollywood, MD, Paula Woodburn her husband Sparky of Hollywood, MD, Katherine Nutter her husband Brian of La Plata, MD, Lisa Goddard her husband Wayne of Valley Lee, MD, Helen Wernecke her husband Ray of Leonardtown, MD, Bitsy Abell her husband David of Hollywood, MD; one son, J. Richard Mattingly, Jr. his wife Donna of Bushwood, MD; one sister, Mary M. Pfeiff of Cary, NC. Also survived by eighteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brothers J. Maguire, Jr., Thomas W. and Charles B. Mattingly. Mr. Mattingly served his country in the U.S. Army and was later employed as an engineering inspector with the MD State Highway Administration for 28 years until his retirement in 1991. He was a life-long resident of St. Mary's County who demonstrated his love for his community through service as Past President of the St. Mary's County Fair Board, Honorary Member of the Leonardtown Volunteer Fire Department and member of the Knights of Columbus. The family received friends on Wednesday, June 1st from 5 to 8 P.M. at St. John's Francis Regis Catholic Church, Hollywood, MD with prayers offered at 7:30 P.M. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Thursday, June 2, 2005 at 10:00 A.M. at the church The Reverend Raymond Schmidt, pastor of the church, officiated. Pallbearers for Mr. Mattingly were his grandsons Brian Woodburn, Kyle Woodburn, Nick Ford, Rick Mattingly, Grant Mattingly, Sam Wernecke, Mark Bailey and Michael Nutter. Honorary pallbearers will be his granddaughters Alison Ford, Emily Ford, Holly Goddard, Jackie Goddard, Coale Bailey, Erica Bailey, Sarah Mattingly, Kate Wernecke and Caitlyn Nutter. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of St. Mary's, P.O. Box 625, Leonardtown, MD 20650, St. John Francis Regis Building Fund, P.O. Box 69, Hollywood, MD 20636 or Hollywood Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 79, Hollywood, MD 20636. Arrangement were by Brinsfield Funeral Home, Leonardtown, MD.
