He was born Oct. 28, 1905, in Humboldt, the son of Joseph and Josephine Works Townsend. He was a 1924 graduate of Humboldt High School, and a self-employed farmer in the Humboldt area for many years. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Pacific Lodge 29 AF&AM and Order of Eastern Star 170, all of Humboldt. He served on the DeWitt School Board and Humboldt School Board 258. He married Frances Sinclair in Humboldt on May 22, 1926, and she survives. He also is survived by four daughters, Peggy Shaffer of Henderson, Nev., Charlotte Townsend of Humboldt, Marlene Breiner of Ft. Scott and Ann Johnson of Chanute; six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Two infant sisters preceded him in death. Cremation is planned. A memorial service will take place at a later date. Johnson-Kunkel Mortuary, Humboldt, is in charge of arrangements.
