YOUNG Joseph Robert Young was born in Clark county, Kentucky, April 8, 1836, and died at his home in Valley Falls, Kansas, September 16, 1915, aged 79 years, 5 months and 8 days. The cause of his death was asthma and chronic bronchitis. When one year of age he came to Clay county, Missouri, with his parents, his father Thomas being among the pioneer farmers in that part of the new west. There J. R. was educated and grew to manhood. In 1853, in his teens he went to Iowa, where he clerked in a store until 1857, when he came to Valley Falls, where he has since made his home. He had however, visited Kansas with a view of locating in 1854. He built a store on Sycamore street and engaged in Mercantile pursuits until 1872 when he embarked in the coal trade, the railroads having reached Valley Falls that year, carrying coal and other merchandise. Later he engaged in the grocery business from which he retired a few years ago. In his declining years he turned his attention to gardening in the spare lots of his hospitable home, where he raised the finest tomatoes, and all kinds of vegetables, for which he found a ready market. He was always a busy man. For years he suffered from chronic bronchitis and periodical attacks of asthma. The last time he was down town was on the day of the last city election, April 5th. He was twice married, first to Miss Fanny Jessie, deceased. By this marriage six children were born; three died in infancy, Philo lives at Kansas City where he is chief clerk in the freight department of the Santa Fe; Lula and Jessie live at Smithville, Mo. For many years he was a member of the Christian church. In 1879 Miss Lou Rhea of Leavenworth county, daughter of Spartan Rhea, one of the pioneers of that county, became his second wife and was his faithful companion and helpmeet until his death. To this union two children were born: Spartan, manager of the H. J. Heinz Co., at Oklahoma City, Okla., and Thomas an electrician at San Francisco, Calif. Being one of the pioneers, Gov. Young, as he was familiarly called, was identified with the growth and development of the county and contributed his share toward the progress of his home town, Valley Falls, of which in an official way he was councilman, street commissioner and city marshal. The funeral was held from the home Saturday morning, Rev. A. L. Wood officiating at the services. During the funeral hour the banks and business houses were closed, in accordance with the proclamation of Mayor Hatfield, as an evidence of the respect and esteem in which he, an old settler and business man, was held by his friends. The burial was in Rose Hill cemetery –"Asleep in Jesus, blessed sleep, from which none ever wake to weep." In her loss the faithful wife has the sympathy of many friends.
