Read More	Joseph Robert Neubeiser was born November 13, 1908 in Cumberland, Maryland to William Joseph Neubeiser and his wife Mary Catherine (nee Lippold). He lived with his parents and younger sister Mary Lee Elizabeth Neubeiser Jacopi (b. 1920) on Polk Street. Joe was a 1927 LaSalle Institute graduate and worked for his father's business Neubeiser & Lippold on North Mechanic Street before working as a salesman for Swift & Co.'s Cumberland office on Williams Street. Joe was a well-known local athlete in the 1920s, playing several sports including basketball, baseball, and soccer. He played on the LaSalle basketball team his junior and senior years. During his junior year at LaSalle in 1926 Joe was selected for the Allegheny County Soccer team and in his senior year he made the WMI League all-star team. After graduating LaSalle, he was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus basketball team the "Cumberland Caseys" and starred as a regular Caseys guard against some of the country's best road teams. Joe played pitcher with the Corriganville and Narrows Park baseball teams and was also on the local Swift & Co. bowling team. Joe married Mary Margaret Keinhofer in June 1934 in St. Patrick Catholic Church in Cumberland. After their honeymoon at the 1933-1934 Chicago World's Fair, the couple returned to Cumberland and lived on Polk Street next door to Joe's parents. They had two children, a daughter Joann Katherine (b. 1937) and son Joseph Robert, Jr. (b. 1946). Joe was a WWII U.S. Navy veteran, serving from 1943-1944 at the U.S. Naval Training Center in Bainbridge, Maryland. He also served with the Maryland Militia, which later became known as the Maryland National Guard. Joe was an avid gardener with a large vegetable garden, fruit trees, and rose garden at his home on Bedford Road where he and his wife moved after his retirement from forty years with Swift & Co. During the 1970s and early 1980s he and Mary entered vegetables, fruits and flowers in the annual Allegany County Fair, with their entries routinely winning top prizes in multiple categories. He was also a talented photographer, woodworker, model builder, and model railroad enthusiast having built an extensive track layout for his 1930s Lionel train collection. Joe and Mary celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in June 1984 with family and friends at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Cumberland. Joe died on June 6, 1993 in Cumberland and was survived by his sister Mrs. Mary Lee Jacopi, daughter Joann, son Joseph Robert, Jr, and seven grandchildren. He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He is buried next to his wife Mary, who pre-deceased him in April 1985, in St. Peter & Paul Catholic Cemetery in Cumberland. Beloved husband, father, and grandfather.
