Description	:	Mary Lee Elizabeth Neubeiser Jacopi was born on March 23, 1920 to parents William Joseph Neubeiser and Mary Catherine (nee Lippold). She lived with her parents and older brother Joseph Robert on Polk Street in Cumberland. Her maternal grandparents were Regina Catherine (nee Albright) and Joseph Henry Lippold who owned the Lippold farm on Bedford Road. Read More	Mary Lee Elizabeth Neubeiser Jacopi was born on March 23, 1920 to parents William Joseph Neubeiser and Mary Catherine (nee Lippold). She lived with her parents and older brother Joseph Robert on Polk Street in Cumberland. Her maternal grandparents were Regina Catherine (nee Albright) and Joseph Henry Lippold who owned the Lippold farm on Bedford Road. A 1937 Ursuline Academy graduate, Mary Lee worked in the medical field and lived in Florida for five years in the early 1950s. On January 30, 1956 in Miami she married fellow-Cumberland native Alfred 'Al' Jacopi, owner of A. Jacopi grocery store at 202 Paca Street in Cumberland. Following a honeymoon in Havana, Cuba, Mary Lee and Al returned to Cumberland and lived on Green Street near Al's mother August and sister Virginia. Al indulged her love of animals, getting her a pet raccoon. Sadly, Al died suddenly of a heart attack in 1961 after only five years of marriage. Mary Lee was well known in Cumberland as an avid horsewoman, learning to ride horses bareback as a child at the LIppold farm owned by her grandfather Joseph Henry Lippold. She participated in numerous Allegany Saddle Club events and her horse Bella Mia won Reserve Grand Champion. A year after the death of her husband Al, who introduced her to horse racing, Mary Lee in 1962 acquired a thoroughbred named 'Should Win', grandson of 'Pensive' who lost the 1944 Belmont crown by a half length after winning the Kentucky Derby and Preakness. 'Should Win' won races at Timonium, Charles Town, Shenandoah Downs, and Hagerstown. His pet name was 'Spooky' and Mary Lee trained him to shake hands (or hooves), show his tattoo, tie and untie ribbon knots, and bow down in welcome. An accomplished bridge player, Mary Lee was a Life Master, playing in tournaments in the U.S. and abroad, achieving life master rank after scoring 300 points — 250 black, 25 red, and 25 gold - in twelve years of tournaments in western Maryland, Baltimore, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and Bermuda. In addition to bridge, she was also an accomplished pianist and widely traveled in Europe and Asia. Mary Lee passed away at age 81 on March 8, 2001 after a long illness following a stroke suffered in January 1998. Beloved wife, sister, and daughter.
