Western Pacific Command. Roy was a Professional Engineer with Pacific Car and Foundry for whom he worked for 31 years before retiring in 1981. He was intricately involved with the Puget Sound Maritime Historical Society, serving over many years in such capacities as curator, membership secretary, museum docent, exhibit planning and installation, and building scale model ships. ∼Joseph Roy Stencil Bruce was the only surviving child of Rob Roy (born William Roy) Bruce (1881-1947) and Anna Agnes Stencil (1888-1976). He was born and lived in the Seattle area except for the period of 1941-1946 when he served with the US Army. Lt Bruce received his commission in 1941 prior to graduating from the University of Washington. He initially served in the Coast Artillery; later the Army trained him as an early radar specialist and deployed him to the flattened summit of Mt Suribachi on Iwo Jima for the final 9 months of WWII. Roy attended St John's Catholic school in the Greenwood neighborhood before graduating from Ballard High in 1936 where he earned a varsity letter. He completed his mechanical engineering degree at the University of Washington in 1946. He later obtained his professional engineer's certification. Roy worked for Skagit Steel and Iron Works, Puget Sound Bridge and Dredging (fondly recalled as Sludge & Drudge), Markey Machinery, and spent 31 years with Pacific Car & Foundry before retiring in 1981. He specialized in gearing, and designed a pioneering lightweight logging winch. He was active in retirement in his well equipped shop, and with the Puget Sound Maritime Historical Society where he served for more than 50 years in a number of positions. Roy was enthusiastic about steam engines, ships, photography, and model building and was a voracious reader. He was an artist in wood, ceramic and pencil whose block-print twin ravens was adopted as the uncreditted logo of the early Burien Arts Gallery, and a poet & writer. He married Mary Seawell Robins of Hampton, Virginia in 1943. They had 3 daughters: Frances, Anna, and Jane.
