Burial will follow at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Father J. Joseph Holzhauser will officiate. Liturgical wake service will be 7:00 pm Friday, October 23, 2009 at Schriver's Memorial Mortuary & Crematory, 414 5th Ave. NW. Joe was born October 29, 1911 in Florence, SD, to Joseph W. and Agnes (Ronke) Karpinske. He was the first son, followed by his sister Loretta two years later. When Agnes passed away in 1916, Joe's father Joseph married Esther M. Troelson and together they had five children: Carl, Leo, Lloyd, Luella and Mary. Joe married Alice Sigety Trautner on November 16, 1936 in Florence, SD. Joe farmed in the Florence and Watertown area for several years, and then joined a construction crew that built elevators across the upper Midwest. Their daughter Katherine joined them in 1945, and their son Michael was born in 1951 in Helena, MT, where they all lived until 1961. Joe and his family returned to South Dakota in 1961 and lived in Baltic, Dell Rapids, Sioux Falls, Pierre, and finally Aberdeen where he retired from Sacred Heart Church and School. Joe was a farmer, a carpenter, and a man who could fix anything and loved to serve his church and community. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, and watching the Minnesota Twins. Joe is survived by his daughter Katherine "Kathy" Gibbs of Chandler, AZ, and his son Michael (Monica Pence) Karpinske of Aberdeen, SD; three grandchildren, Mark (Carol Lall) Platz of Chandler, AZ, Sarah (Christopher) Fladhammer of Rosemount, MN, and Jessica (Nathaniel) Crowley of Duluth, MN; and six great grandchildren, Ray, Elizabeth and Andrew of Phoenix, AZ, Liam, Ian, and Elizabeth of Rosemount, MN; his sister, Mary, and his special friend, Delores Berreth of Aberdeen, SD. Joe is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Alice, his brothers, Carl, Leo and Lloyd; his sisters Loretta and Luella.
