Joseph Schall was born in Tilsonburg, Canada, November 27 1858. His parents were Louis and Phoebe Schall. He was one of ten children. He had five sisters and four brothers, all of whom have passed away except his youngest brother and sister, who live in Flint, Michigan. He was married twice and had five children and two step-children, all of them have preceded him in death except one daughter who lives in Virginia, Minn. His second wife was Citty Fish (a sister of the late Mrs. Mort Irish). Mr. Schall was very good and kind to his wife during her last illness, when she was bedfast for five years. She passed away May 1st, 1949. When he was eight years old, with his parents and five brothers and sisters, they made the trip to Michigan in an open wagon and drove oxen. On this trip they saw their first train. It took them three weeks and two days to make the trip. He lived in Michigan until he was a young man. He never had a chance to get an education, as he always had to help his father at his work. He never received more than a second grade education. He always worked very hard and was quite successful in a business way. He did very well financially for a number of years. He lived in Denver and Boulder, Colorado for many years. In this vicinity he worked in the lumber woods and on the rivers, floating logs down the streams. He also moved houses in Denver. He moved to Genoa in 1906. He continued to move buildings here and in various parts of the state. Mr. Schall had many interesting pioneer stories to tell and he told them very well. After an injury to his knee he was in the hospital for two or three weeks, after which he was cared for in the home of F. H. Cuddeford for five months, as Mrs. Cuddeford's health was failing he was taken to the Leah Goodwin home, where he was taken care of for almost seven years. He was quite well for a man of his age up until February 18 when he had a fall and broke his hip. After that he was cared for in the East Haven Home, where he passed away on August 30, 1957 at the age of 98 years, nine months and three days. He was always very patient and never complained about anything except his being blind. He was blind for the latter part of his life and also very hard of hearing. Funeral services were held from the Methodist church September 4, at 2 P. M. with the Rev. Fraser officiating. Interment was in the Valley View Cemetery and funeral arrangements were in charge of the Hasch Mortuary.
