Description	:	Joseph Stewart Gabriel died at his home on Woodlawn Avenue on September 10, 1900 at 72 years, 9 months, and 24 days as the result of a stroke of paralysis suffered on the 24th of last month. Mr. Gabriel was born at Milford Center, Union County, Ohio November 16, 1827 to John F. and Maria Stewart Gabriel. He resided in Milford Center until he moved to Green County, Wisconsin. He was married to Miss Else Jane Cunningham, who survives him, on June 2, 1853 at Monroe, Wisconsin. They removed to Lake City, Iowa in April 1889. Ten children were born... Mr. Gabriel was born at Milford Center, Union County, Ohio November 16, 1827 to John F. and Maria Stewart Gabriel. He resided in Milford Center until he moved to Green County, Wisconsin. He was married to Miss Else Jane Cunningham, who survives him, on June 2, 1853 at Monroe, Wisconsin. They removed to Lake City, Iowa in April 1889. Ten children were born to the family, two of whom died in infancy. All of the remaining children were present at the funeral as follows: Mrs. Lethal M. Ames of Sutton, Nebraska; Mrs. Mary Jane Smith, Miss Hula O. Gabriel, and Mrs. Maria S. Chapman of Lake City; Mrs. Hittie Louella Peebles of Des Moines; John Huston Gabriel of Sioux City; Rodney Gabriel of Lake City, and George Gabriel of Sioux City. The funeral was attended by a large concourse of friends. It was held at his home on Wednesday at 10:30, service by Rev. E.C.Bennett of the First Christian Church whose words were entirely benefiting and appropriate and burial took place in the Lake City Cemetery. The pallbearers were: L.F. Danforth, S.T. Hutchison, Wm. A. Townsend, J.E. Chapman, and W.W. Zane. Mr. Gabriel was in all respects an exemplary citizen and an upright honest man. In his home, he was the most kindly of men, whom friend and neighbor he won the admiration of all who knew him. Starting late in life with little or nothing, he retired from farming about 12 years ago and has lived a life of ease in his home place. During his long and active life on the farm, he succeeded far beyond his fondest anticipations having acquired snug fortune by economy and well-directed efforts in his pursuits. His worth was recognized by the citizens of Lake City who honored him with membership to this city council a few years ago, which office he filled. He was of a cheerful disposition, having a pleasant word for all whom he met and making friends wherever he went. Mr. Gabriel was a kind and industrious husband and father, and left a clean record of his life, to his home and the satisfaction of his family.
