Read More	The Nebraska Signal, April 1946: Joseph Strauss was born December 25, 1866, in Bohemia. In 1882 he, with his uncle, came to this country and settled in Fillmore County, Nebraska. June 13, 1893, he was united in holy wedlock with Margaret Schropfer Staritz. This union was blessed with five children. He was engaged in farming until his retirement in the spring of 1920, when he and Mrs. Strauss moved to town. the rich lore of the countryside, appealing, they contented themselves in the pleasure of more leisure time, contributing to the village, a beautiful home, the upkeep of which was their ambition. their home was a creditable addition to Ohiowa, fruits of their industrious years. With the passing of his companion in December of 1943, hours were lonely but his children served him loyally whenever the need arose for his comfort and health. The past year or more, Mr. Strauss had been failing in health. He departed this life Thursday, April 25, 1946, at a little past 5 p.m. He was friendly, open minded and sincere in friendship, these qualifications resulting in many fine friendships. Survivors are his five children, Mrs. Minnie Schelbitzki, Mrs. Lizzie Matthies, Mrs. Rose Kohler, Ed Strauss and Joe Strauss Jr., two step-children, Will Staritz of Brighton, Col., and Mrs. Albert (Mollie) Langhorst, Milligan; seventeen grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held April 28 from the home, Rev. H. J. Diekhoff officiating and at 2:30 in the St. John Lutheran Church. Music was furnished by a quartet, Mrs. R. Meyer, Gracie Ann Diekhoff, Gustaf Thomas and Wesley Cradduck, with Mrs. Cradduck accompanist. The pallbearers were grandchildren, Lloyd and Hollis Schelbitzki, Martin Diekhoff, Louis Matties, Earl Strauss and Virgil Kohler. Assisting with the floral arrangements were Mrs. Philippi, Mrs. Gust Thomas, Mrs. Henry Folkerts and Mrs. J. C. Williamson. burial was in the Ohiowa Cemetery.
