Description	:	Joe was born the 7th of 10 children, five boys and five girls, to immigrant parents, Joseph and Eva Shubert in Dawson/Colfax, new Mexico on November 9, 1919. Read More	Joe was born the 7th of 10 children, five boys and five girls, to immigrant parents, Joseph and Eva Shubert in Dawson/Colfax, new Mexico on November 9, 1919. Life, at an early age, was hard in rural New Mexico. The family raised and grew most of their own food. Not much thrived there without irrigation. His Father would wake Dad up before dawn to go out and move the water lines on their 525 acre farm. Even though Joe’s greatest interest was sports, and he really wanted to become a Coach, his Father’s educational directives prevailed and Joe graduated from Barnes School of Commerce in 1939; within a short period of time, he had relocated to Washington, D.C., working for the Federal Government. On a blind date there, he met Janis Louise Scholl, an Iowa farm girl, who had also traveled to the Nation’s Capital for employment. They were married on June 7, 1942, and shortly thereafter, Joe joined the what became the Army Air Corps, and was assigned to the CBI Mission, supporting the Flying Tigers in Kunming, China for the duration of WWII. A daughter, Jerilyn Lee, was born in July of 1943. After the War, the family relocated to Iowa and Joe purchased a shoe store which he owned and operated for 4 years; then he became involved in residential construction with an Army friend and built the family’s home in Pocahontas, where a second child, Jon Larry, was born in March of 1951. Joe attended college under the GI Bill and the family relocated to Wiota, Iowa, where he purchased an acreage and farmed part time, working with the Cass County Assessor’s office, full time. His career path lead to the National Park Service and ultimately, he became the Supervisory Appraiser for the Rocky Mountain Region of the National Park Service, covering all of the National Parks west of the Mississippi River, including Alaska, Hawaii and Guam. Along the way, he played semi-pro baseball, and even played with a local men’s basketball team in Wiota. The pool table in the family room was another favorite venue. He was an avid golfer and his greatest treasure was the golf ball with which he made a hole-in-one. And later, at the age of 93, Joe won Honorable Mention in a neighborhood football pool of approximately 30 participants; his winnings paid for his next year’s entry fee and a great dinner. His other favorite game was bridge, at which he excelled, for decades. He was an accomplished builder, first with the family home in the early 50s, then with remodeling the Victorian-era houses and outbuildings on their farms, and in Colorado, he moved a series of duplexes to lots he had purchased on which he’d built foundations, for rental properties. Then he took his carpentry talents indoors, building dining room walls of cabinetry for Janis’ antique crystal collection, and refinishing unique vintage furniture. Having celebrated his 95th birthday a few weeks earlier, Joe rests in peace as one of the last remaining members of “The Greatest Generation.” He crossed the great divide on December 26, 2014, and was survived by his wife, Janis; his daughter, Jeri; his son, Jon; and his youngest brother, Ralph.
