Martinez Passed Away Judge Jose Tiofilo Martinez died at his home Tuesday morning July 20 1954 at Pagosa Springs after an illness of several months. He as born March 4 1874 at Parkview NM son of Jose Benedito Martinez and Maria L. Valdez. In 1878 his parents moved to Trimble Springs above Durango. He attended Public schools in La Plata County until 1887 and in 1888 he attended Jesuit College Now Know as Regis College of Denver. In 1902 he was appointed Postmaster at Pagosa Springs and resigned two years later. Judge Martinez was married to Manuelita Madrid Nov 8 1901 and to this union were born nine children all surviving Nineteen grandchildren and seven great Grand children also surviving . As well as three brothers one sister and numerous other relatives. Judge Martinez in later years engaged in sheep and cattle rising for a good number of years. For a few years he also operated a merchandise store in Pagosa Springs Colorado. He was active in political circles for many years during his life and an active supporter of civil organizations and welfare programs During World War II he was appointed Chairman of the local Reshantioning board for which he received a high commendation for his services for the U.S. government During his lifetime he also held several other important positions of public service . In 1934 He was elected County Judge of Archuleta County which position he held until his death. Funeral services were held at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Pagosa Springs at 9:30 a.m. Thursday July 22 1954 with burial in Hilltop cemetery. Judge Martinez was well know and respected throughout the entire San Juan Basin and sympathy is extended to the bereaved family.
