Description	:	Joseph V. Kuffner, 86, was born on April 10, 1925, in Anaconda to Joseph S. and Katherine (Pinter) Kuffner. Joseph attended St. Peter's School in Anaconda and graduated from there. Joseph passed away on April 2, 2012, at his residence. Read More	Joseph V. Kuffner, 86, was born on April 10, 1925, in Anaconda to Joseph S. and Katherine (Pinter) Kuffner. Joseph attended St. Peter's School in Anaconda and graduated from there. Joseph passed away on April 2, 2012, at his residence. Joseph went to work at the Anaconda Smelter in the Converters the day after graduating from high school and he had various labor jobs while there. He worked at the Converters until he was inducted into the U.S. Army on July 21, 1944. He departed on the Queen Mary on Jan. 1, 1945. There were 15,000 soldiers on the ship, including his brother, Bill and they did not see one another during the crossing. They arrived in Southampton, England, on Jan. 6, 1945. (This was the same port his mother had sailed from for the USA in 1907.) There were nine soldiers in a stateroom initially meant for one person, triple bunked and they were given two meals a day. They wore the same clothes the entire trip, "Not enough space to change your mind, let alone change your clothes." Joseph participated in the Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe Campaigns (the Battle of the Bulge). He received the following decorations and citations: European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Army of Occupation Medal Germany, Combat Infantryman Badge, and Expert Infantryman Badge. He was reassigned to the 555 Signal Aircraft Warning Battalion (SAW) and he remained in this Battalion until his separation from service. His reason and authority for separation was of dependency, where his brother, Bill was killed in action two weeks prior to end of WW II. He returned to the United States via the USS George Washington and was separated from service with an Honorable Discharge on May 3, 1946. Joseph married Charlotte Murray on Aug. 25, 1951, in Butte and they celebrated their 60th anniversary in 2011. Following his discharge from the U.S. Army, he resumed employment with the Anaconda Co. He successfully completed the apprenticeship program for machinists. He worked as a machinist for the Anaconda Co. for 13 years until it became necessary to seek employment elsewhere for health reasons. Joseph worked for eight years for the Challenge Creamery as truck driver, delivering milk products to residences and stores. He completed a Meat Cutter Apprenticeship for the State of Montana and later worked 17 years as a meat cutter for the State of Montana. He retired from the State of Montana in 1985. After his retirement, he loved traveling with his wife and best friend, Charlotte, and spending time with his grandchildren, Katie and Cory Kuffner. Joseph enjoyed many sports, playing fast pitch softball, baseball, golf and bowling. He umpired American Legion baseball for a number of years and had the opportunity of umpiring the State American Legion Tournament in Anaconda. Joseph was a member of the Anaconda Catholic Community, he served on the first Parish Council at St. Paul's Parish, and he served three years on the Diocesan Pastoral Council under the guidance of Bishop Elden Curtiss. He was a life member and Past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus Council #882, he served a number of years on the Degree Team and was captain of that team for five years, and he was the Past Faithful Navigator of the Fourth Degree Francis Meagher Assembly. He was a recipient of the Green Fez from the Shriners for his continuous work on the Knights of Columbus-Shriners annual fundraiser. He was a life member of the VFW and a former member of the BPOE #239 and Anaconda Country Club. Joseph is survived by his wife, Charlotte; sons, Michael (Vicki) Kuffner, Anaconda, and Stephen (Mary Lou) Kuffner, Anchorage, Alaska; two grandchildren, Katie Kuffner, Missoula, and Cory Kuffner, Boise, Idaho; two great-grandchildren, Bryonna and Landon; and one sister, Florence McCarvel, San Jose, Calif. Joseph was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Albina Powers, Josephine Pupich and Ann Kuffner; and one brother, William Kuffner. Mass of Christian Burial was at 10:30 a.m. today (Wednesday), April 4, at the Holy Family Catholic Church, Anaconda. Interment was at Mount Olivet Cemetery with military honors by the Anaconda American Legion Post #21 and the Montana Army Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the Pintler Hospice at 118 East 7th St., Anaconda or donor's choice. Longfellow Finnegan Riddle Funeral home is entrusted with Joseph's funeral arrangements.
