Description	:	Funeral services were conducted at the Verdigre ZCBJ Hall Saturday afternoon, Dec. 30 for Joseph Viterna, long time resident of Bohemia township, who died following a stroke, Dec. 26. The Rev. J.R. Becker, pastor of Congregational-Baptist church, officiated. Burial was in the Jelen cemetery. Joseph Viterna Sr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Jan Viterna, was born Nov. 5, 1881, near Armstrong. He grew to manhood on the family homestead and attended the Armstrong rural school. He was past 69 years of age at the time of his death. On Dec. 20, 1908, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Havel of Rogers at Center, Nebr. They lived on his parents homestead, where their seven children were born. The deceased and his brother, John, who died in 1934, were the first twins born in Knox county. Mr. Viterna served as assessor in Bohemia township for 20 years. He was treasurer of school district #27 for many years and was one of the first members of the Knox County Farmers Union in Riverside Local #137. He also was an active member of the Verdigre Farmers Union Co-op Assn. He served as treasurer of the National Bohemian Cemetery association in Bohemia township and was a member of the ZCBJ in Verdigre. Retiring from farming in 1943, he and his wife moved to Verdigre. Surviving are his wife, Mary; his seven children, Sylvia Potter of Mt. Gilead, O., Vlasta Kreycik of Niobrara, Evelyn Tuch of Verdel, Joe Jr. of Verdigre, Marie Juracek and Emil of Omaha, Miss Blanche Viterna of Lincoln; two sisters, Josie Zeman and Marie Tikalsky of Verdigre; nine grandchildren.
