Description	:	Jan (John) Viterna was born April 26, 1846 at Pocepicich, Bohemia. There he grew to manhood and also served two years in the army. His trade was mille, at which he worked for several years. In the year 1872, he came to the United States and settled at Chicago, where he resided for three years. On May 16, 1873, he was married to Anna Kocab. One daughter was born to them there. In the year of 1875, he moved to Pocahantas, Iowa, where he farmed. There two more daughters were born to them. In the fall of 1879 he filed for a homestead... Read More	Jan (John) Viterna was born April 26, 1846 at Pocepicich, Bohemia. There he grew to manhood and also served two years in the army. His trade was mille, at which he worked for several years. In the year 1872, he came to the United States and settled at Chicago, where he resided for three years. On May 16, 1873, he was married to Anna Kocab. One daughter was born to them there. In the year of 1875, he moved to Pocahantas, Iowa, where he farmed. There two more daughters were born to them. In the fall of 1879 he filed for a homestead in Nebraska. Later in the spring of 1880 with his family and four other families, he came by wagon to Niobrara, Nebr. and settled on a homestead, where he resided until his death, which occurred, January 10, 1925 at 6:30 a.m. just exactly nine years after his wife, who died January 10, 1916 at 10:00 a.m. One daughter, Christie, died on Oct. 24, 1898 and one son, Karel, died May 9, 1918. Those who survive are Mrs. Josie Zeman near Center, Mrs. Marie Tikalsky, John Viterna of Creighton and Joe Viterna with whom he lived on the old home place, one brother, Anton Viterna of Chicago, Ill and ten grandchildren. He was a charter member of the ZCBJ Lodge. Funeral services were held at the home, conducted by the Lodge. He was laid to rest in the Bohemian National Cemetery beside his wife. The Citizen joins friends in extending heartfelt sympathy and offering words of condolence to the bereaved ones in the hour of their sorrow.
