Death Came After Suffering for Several Years. Joseph Welte, a resident of David City for 25 years, departed this life on Monday afternoon, Sept. 18, about 4 o'clock. Mr. Welte had been in rather poor health for over 14 years and in failing health for over a year. He was bedfast a little over a week prior to his death. Mrs. Welte and seven sons survive Mr. Welte. The sons are Lou, Fred, Roy, Ralph, George, Paul, and Herbert. Roy and Ralph are twins. The boys all make David City their home. Mr. Welte leaves seven grandchildren, a brother and sister. Peter F. Welte and Mrs. Dora Geiger, both living in El Paso, Ill., are his brother and sister. Mr. Welte's brother and a niece, Miss Emma Geiger, came from El Paso on Wednesday of last week. Roy, George and Paul Welte, all members of Company K, Fourth Nebraska regiment stationed at Mercedes, Texas, were granted furloughs of a few weeks on account of their father's illness and arrived home Wednesday of last week. Two of Mrs. Welte's sisters, Mrs. Arthur Burfield and Mrs. George Teroux, of Chisholm, Minn., have been here for five weeks. John McAfee and daughter, Miss Gaile, relatives of Mrs. Welte, came from Fullerton to attend the funeral services. Funeral services were held this (Thursday) morning at 9 o'clock in St. Mary's Catholic church, David City, and were conducted by Rev. Father Boll, pastor of the church. Interment was in the Catholic cemetery. The pallbearers were Clarence Coe, E. J. Dworak, J. Ira Duncan, I. T. McCaskey, J. H. Sleeger and A. M. Walling. A native of New York state, having been born in Corryville, Green county, Joseph Welte at the age of four years moved with his parents to Woodford county, Illinois. He grew to manhood there, spending most of his time on a farm. In 1883 he and Miss Nancy Grafft were united in marriage in El Paso, Ill. For two years they lived in El Paso and for two years were on a farm near El Paso. In 1887 they came to Butler county and for four years were located on farms a few miles south of David City. In the spring of '91 the Welte family came to David City and have since resided here. Mr. Welte was engaged in farming for a good share of his life. Mr. Welte was in his 61st year. He was born June 23, 1856. Both of his parents were born in Germany. His father died in 1908 and his mother in 1899. Two brothers also preceded him to the grave. Membership in three fraternal organizations, the A. O. U. W., Ben Hur and Degree of Honor lodges, was held by Mr. Welte. He had been affiliated with the first two named for many years. Until recently he had always held office in at least one of the lodges. He was a member of the Catholic church. Mr. Welte was a man of quiet and retiring nature, inoffensive, likeable, and possessor of many excellent characteristics. He was ever deeply attached to his home and family.
