Description	:	Funeral services for Joe W. Hammes, 44, Emmetsburg, were held Thursday morning in St. Thomas church at that place. The Rev. Father M. McNerney read the requiem mass. The sermon was preached by Rev. Father W.F. Mason. As it was a military funeral, the members of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Legion Auxiliary attended in a body, and also the Knights of Columbus. Honorary pallbearers were Earl Godden, Melvin Hand, Gene Carney, Henry Willingham, Jack Higley and Dr. H.C. Heyen. The cause of Mr. Hammes’ death was a cerebral hemorrhage. He had been in ill health for some time. On Monday morning his brother, John of Emmetsburg, took him to St. Anthony’s hospital at Council Bluffs for treatment, later in the afternoon his condition became worse and he died that evening about 6:30 o’clock. His brother John had left for home and when arriving in Emmetsburg learned of Joe’s death. The deceased saw active service in France during the World War. He was in the battles of the Meuse-Argunne and Verdun. Altogether he spent nine months overseas with the 52nd pioneer infantry, the old New York 12th. He was gassed, the final result being mastoid infection which caused him long and continuous suffering. During the past several years Mr. Hammes often found it necessary to visit hospitals where he occasionally underwent surgical operations, but none of them were successful in relieving him of his painful condition. Joe Hammes, son of Mrs. John Hammes of Pocahontas, was born at Portsmouth, Iowa, on Oct. 19, 1896. He came to Pocahontas in 1907. He was educated in this town. For a time Mr. Hammes was in civil service, as a rural mail carrier. In 1925 he located in Emmetsburg where in partnership with his father and brothers he entered the shoe business. Mr. Hammes was united in marriage to Miss Elvira Richter at Garner, this state, on Nov. 7, 1922. To this union two daughters were born – Madeline, 11, and Marylin, 6. They, besides Mrs. Hammes, survive him. Also left to mourn his loss is his mother, Mrs. John Hammes of Pocahontas; Matt, Ted and Leo Hammes, Mrs. James Sinek and Miss Monica Hammes, all of Pocahontas; Mrs. Ed Edmundson, Medelia, Minn.; and Sister Mary Pauline of Des Moines. His father and one sister preceded him in death. The deceased was a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars and had served as commander of both organizations.
