Hammes, 80, retired Pocahontas businessman, were held Saturday in Sacred Heart Catholic Church with burial in Calvary Cemetery. Mr. Hammes died April 17 at the Pocahontas Good Samaritan Center where he had been a resident since March, 1968. He had been in ill health since suffering a stroke in 1963. Mr. Hammes died April 17 at the Pocahontas Good Samaritan Center where he had been a resident since March, 1968. He had been in ill health since suffering a stroke in 1963. Honorary casketbearers were Joe McMahon, Dr. J.J. Ryan, Theo McCartan, A.L. Thornton, C.F. Lindeman, and D.A. Mitchell. Active casketbearers were Carl Storr, Howard Shimon, Gerald Strathman, William Machovets, Lloyd Gochenour and Jack McCartan. Born at Portsmouth, he attended school there and came with the family to Pocahontas in 1907. They farmed for a year after which he and his father, John Hammes, opened a shoe store in Pocahontas. He continued in this business until 1943 and then went into a hatchery and produce business, known as the Pocahontas Produce. He retired in 1963. On June 16, 1911 he was married to Sadonna Hronek of Pocahontas who survives along with two sons, Paul of Scotch Plains, N.J., and Luke of Paramount, Calif., five daughters, Mrs. Joe Hallman of Pocahontas Mrs. Phil Muehl of Waterloo, Mrs. John Marolf of Neptune, N.J., Mrs. Paul Hatz of Des Moines, and Miss Lolita Hammes of Northwood; 24 grandchildren; and four sisters, Mrs. Barbara Sinek and Mrs. Margaret Edmundson of Pocahontas, Sister M. Pauline RSM, Des Moines, and Miss Monica Hammes of Cleveland, Ohio. A daughter, Sadonna, died February 1, 1965. Mr. Hammes was a member of Sacred Heart parish, of the Catholic Order of Forresters and of the Knights of Columbus. For many years he served as a trustee of the parish and was a member of the choir. He served as a Pocahontas councilman 24 years and was a member of the adult band which presented many concerts at the courthouse square. Among those attending the funeral services from out-of-town were Paul Hammes and son, Peter, of Scotch Plaines, N.J., and son, Joe of Bloomington, Ind., Luke Hammes of Paramount, Calif., Linda Hallman of Kansas City, Mr. and Mrs. Phil Muehl and children, Philip, Mark and Sadonna of Waterloo and daughters, Barbara of Cedar Rapids and Mary of Winona, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. John Marolf and Michelle of Neptune, N.J., Mr. and Mrs. Paul Hatz and children, Rusty, Mickie, Terrie and Monica of Des Moines and daughter, Lynn of Chicago, Miss Lolita Hammes of Northwood, Sister M. Pauline, Mrs. Ted Hammes and Betty and Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Sparks of Des Moines, Mrs. Leo Hammes, Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Hammes and Rev. Richard Ries of Fort Dodge, Arnold and Earl Muehl of Granville, Mr. and Mrs. Faye Galbreath of Albert City, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Leinen, Michael Leinen and John Leinen of Portsmouth, Rev.
