He, in company with a friend, were staying at the home of a friend, W.H. Clark, and it is not known how the escaping of gas occurred but when the boys were discovered the next morning they had been dead about seven hours. Joe Wall was born in Grant township, January 3, 1892, being thus a trifle over 19 years of age. His mother passed to the great beyond while he was but a baby and his father then moved to town. Joe made his home with his father and step-mother until just the past few months. He had been working on a bridge gang all summer and when the gang was laid off November 1st, Joe decided to go south and see some of the country. He was in Arkansas awhile and it was upon his return home that he stopped at Belle Plaine and went to work for Clark. The latter recently sold out and moved to Boone which accounts for Mr. Wall being in Boone Thursday. The funeral services were held from St. Joseph's church here Monday forenoon and were attended by many friends of the deceased. The pall bearers were Henry Conway, Arthur Fritz, Wm. Carroll, Geo. Cotes, and Chas. and Lester Hart. The bereaved family of the young lad have the sincerest sympathy of the community in their loss. The following; from the Boone News Republican tells of the circumstances surrounding this sad affair: "Friday morning, when he went to the door of their room to call them, W.H. Clark, of 1549 Sixth street, found Joe Wall of Carroll and his friend, known only as "Jack" dead from asphyxiation. The room was stifling with the gas which had escaped during the night and it took some effort on the part of Mr. Clark to get to the windows and open them. That the death was purely accidental was the decision of Dr. Walker after he had heard the account of the young men's presence in the Clark home, and it was decided that no inquest was necessary. The W.H. Clark family just returned to Boone on Wednesday of this week from Belle Plaine, where since last October they had been running a restaurant which they recently sold. After they left here in the fall they rented the house furnished to a family who remained in it but month, and then moved out. During the time no one had lived in it and when the Clarks returned Wednesday they went right into their home. Thursday evening these two young men who had been in the Clark employ in Belle Plaine, "Jack" as a cook and Joe Wall as waiter, came to Boone out of work. They went to the Clark residence where they were welcomed and where they were given a room for the night. They retired early and although they closed their door, they occasionally called to the members of the Clark family with bits of information or related jokes in which all were interested. The window of their room was closed as was their door and it was not long before they were overcome by the gas which gradually filled the room. At about 3:00 o'clock Friday morning Mrs. Clark thought she smelled gas and she started out to make an investigation of the gas stove and lights over the house. She could find nothing wrong and finally decided that perhaps some pipe had sprung a leak in their absence so she retired. At 7:30 Friday morning Mr. Clark decided to call the young men and as it was still dark, he started upstairs with a match for light. As he advanced the odor of gas became stronger and stronger and before he reached the boys room, he had decided it would be safer to go without a light. He opened their door and was nearly overcome by the gas which then poured out.
