February 19, 1941 - Carroll Daily Herald - Funeral services for Joseph Winthouser, a longtime resident of Carroll County, who died Tuesday morning, are to be held at 9 o'clock Thursday morning at the St Joseph Church, with Rt. Rev. Monsignor P.T. Lynch offering the requiem mass. Burial will be in the parish cemetery and pall bearers will be Joe Wiedemeier, Theodore Staiert, Victor Schirck, George O'Donnell, John Boyce and W.J. Schleisman. The body is resting at the family home until the rites, having been returned there from the Dietrich Funeral Home at 2 o'clock this afternoon. Mr. Winthouser, who was 86 years old, had lived in Carroll County since 1883. Born in Masdorf, Germany, Dec. 19, 1854, he came to the United States sixty eight years ago, arriving in Chicago the year after the big fire. Following a short stay in Chicago, he located at Sycamore, Illinois, where he met Margaret Zenner, who became his bride in December, 1880. In 1883 Mr. and Mrs. Winthouser came to Carroll County to make their home on a farm south of Glidden, where they lived until 1912, when they moved into the town of Glidden. In March, 1931, they came to Carroll to reside. Surviving Mr. Winthouser are his wife, two sons, Fred Winthouser of Carroll and William Winthouser of Glidden, and one daughter; Mrs. Herschel White (Gertrude), of Des Moines; five children, Bernard and Harold Bender, Mrs. Ward Blinn (Evelyn) and Mildred Bender of Glidden and Mrs. William Helms (Margaret) of Davenport; and great grandchildren, Leland Dolores Bender, and Jerry and Donald Bender of Glidden. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Mrs. Grant Bender (Nellie), who died Aug. 19, 1936. Mr. Winthouser, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Winthouser, was the youngest and last of a family of 6 children. He and a brother, Matt, of Greenburg, WI. were the only two who came to this country, the others remaining in Germany. Matt Winthouser died 3 years ago. Mr. Winthouser was a member of St Joseph's Church and the Holy Name Society of the parish. Death came to him at the family home, 209 North Court Street, Tuesday morning, after a week's illness. His condition had been critical since Sunday when he suffered a heart attack.
