Born March 18, 1918, she was preceded in death by her first two husbands, George Noyce and Lauren Davis, and an infant daughter, Nelly Noyce. She is survived by her husband, Alan Herbert, and two children, Leona Wyatt of Chadron, Nebraska, and Larry Noyce of Tucson, Arizona. Also surviving are stepdaughters Dallerie Davis of Pleasant Valley and Kayla Clark of Missoula, Montana, and stepson Lauren Steve Davis of Arlington, Virginia. There are 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren as well. Josie was a noted artist in several media for more than 70 years. She did custom leatherwork for many years and began painting in the 1930s, using household enamels on pieces of linoleum. Her later canvases sold widely both in the Tri-State area and in Arizona, where she spent her winters. She was a charter member of the Black Hills Art Association and affiliated with several art groups in Arizona. She was honored with a two-artist show with nationally known sculptor Edward E. Hlavka at the High Plains Heritage Center Museum in Spearfish, and she was an active participant in the Quick Draw shows and sales there for a number of years. Her paintings were also exhibited in Las Vegas, Tucson, Mesa and Scottsdale, Arizona, and Sioux City, Iowa. She was a charter exhibitor at the Western Arts Roundup held during the Black Hills Roundup in Belle Fourche. Josie worked for a number of years at the Belle Fourche Livestock Exchange and held the distinction of being the first female weigh-master in the United States. Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 28, at the Christian Life Center in Belle Fourche, with the Rev. Paul Howard officiating. Burial will be in Pine Slope Cemetery. A memorial to the Christian Life Center has been established in lieu of flowers. Arrangements are under the direction of Kline-Frost Funeral Chapel in Belle Fourche.
