Description	:	Josephine Paschall Mangum, 91, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on March 12, 2014. She is now reunited with her husband of 66 years and the true love of her life, Carpenter "Buddy" Mangum whom she lost in May 2013. Jo was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Her family will always cherish the unselfish love and care they received and will miss her greatly. A resident of Durham, born in Orange County on June 16, 1922 to the late Elsie Griffin Paschall and Don Freeland Paschall. She was the second of eight children. Jo was a graduate of Hillsborough High School where she played on the women's basketball team. Before marriage, she worked at various companies including S.H. Kress & Co. and Durham Coca-Cola Bottling Co. After marriage, her life became her husband and children. She was the consummate homemaker. Jo had many hobbies and talents. A natural cook, she was famous for her pound cake and black walnut cake with its secret icing recipe. A wonderful seamstress, she made clothes for herself, daughters and others for many years. Later in life, she started making jewelry and was so thrilled to run into family and friends wearing one of her creations. She loved working in her yard among her beautiful flowers and was gifted with an awe-inspiring "green thumb" and appreciation for all living things. She could find (or create) beauty in everything around her. She was recognized by the Watts-Hillandale Association for her back yard design and landscaping. She was also an animal lover rescuing birds and small animals and nurturing them back to health. She and Carpenter took in stray cats that quickly experienced as much love as they gave. Jo was a lifelong member of Mt. Hermon Baptist Church where she was baptized at the age of 12 in University Creek. She taught children in the Nursery, Sunday School and Vacation Bible School for many years. She served on the Flower Committee often supplying flowers from her own garden. She had the joy of playing on the church bowling team and received a trophy for "most improved." She loved her Lord, her children and grandchildren, her family, her church, and her kitties but more than anything else on earth, she loved her husband. These past 10 months since Carpenter passed away have been especially difficult for her, but the family finds peace in knowing they are together again. Jo is survived by her three children, Carolyn Dearing (Ronnie), Barry Mangum (Tony Burden) and Bonnie Morton (Tim) and two grandsons, Michael Dearing and Evan Morton. She is also survived by a sister, Mary Ellis, and three brothers, Wayne Paschall, Robert Paschall and Walter Paschall, all of Durham. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a sister, Thelma "Pat" Moore, and two brothers, Don F. Paschall, Jr. and Alton Paschall. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m. at Clements Funeral Home in Durham and other times at the home. The service will be held at Mt. Hermon Baptist Church on Monday at 11:00 a.m. Officiating will be the Rev. Rich Goodier, Dr. Jerry Harper and Dr. Robert Winecoff. Entombment will follow a 1:30 p.m. service in the Chapel Mausoleum at Historic Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh, NC 27601. Durham Herald-Sun - Mar 17, 2014
