Description	:	Otis Carpenter "Buddy" Mangum, 91, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on May 6, 2013. He passed away peacefully surrounded by his family who loved him dearly. He was the fourth... Read More	Otis Carpenter "Buddy" Mangum, 91, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on May 6, 2013. He passed away peacefully surrounded by his family who loved him dearly. He was devoted to his wife, children and their families. He was truly a member of the greatest generation. He never quit – always kept going. He was a role model on how to work, how to live and most importantly how to love. A native of Durham, he was born on September 20, 1921 to the late Rena Parrish Mangum and Willard Otis Mangum. He was the fourth of ten children. Buddy was a World War II veteran serving in the Philippines, New Guinea and Japan with the Army's 439th Engineer Division. For over 60 years, these great men and their families reunited annually to remember the service they gave to their country. He was a past member of the Bright Leaf Civitan Club, Durham Chamber of Commerce and the American Legion Post #7. He also spent a number of years accompanying students of the Durham Public Schools Safety Patrol to Washington, DC. Buddy's first job was at Erwin Cotton Mill. After the Army, he went to work for the Durham Coca-Cola Bottling Company. During his 44 year career there, he held a number of positions from Route Salesman, Manager of various areas including New Products, Promotions, Cold Drink and Home Market, and finally Vice President of Sales and Marketing. After retiring, he returned as a consultant for five years. In 1981, he was one of sixteen people recognized for their achievements by the Sales and Marketing Executives Club of Durham. He was a member of Mt. Hermon Baptist Church in Durham where he formerly served as a Deacon and on various committees including the Stewardship and Pastor Search Committees. An avid UNC fan, he was roasted at his retirement party by Dean Smith and, for his 90th birthday, received a note of congratulations from Roy Williams. He also loved playing golf at Hillandale Golf Course. Buddy is survived by his wife of 65 years and the love of his life, Josephine Paschall Mangum; his three children, Carolyn Dearing (Ronnie), Barry Mangum (Tony Burden), Bonnie Morton (Tim); and two grandsons, Michael Dearing and Evan Morton. He is also survived by a sister, Clara Smith of Carson City, NV; brothers, Jack Mangum of St. George, UT and Russell Mangum of New Smyrna Beach, FL. He was predeceased by his sisters, Nellie Emory, Ellen "Dell" Riley, Annie Laurie Byrd and Frances Mangum; brothers, Sonny Mangum and Pete "Brooks" Mangum. The service will be held at Mt. Hermon Baptist Church on Thursday at 11 a.m. Officiating will be the Rev. Rich Goodier, the Rev. Jerry Harper and Dr. Robert Winecoff. Entombment will follow a 1:30 p.m. committal in the Chapel Mausoleum at Historic Oakwood Cemetery at 701 Oakwood Avenue, Raleigh, NC 27601. Durham Herald-Sun - May 8, 2013
