Steil, Mrs. Gappa was born Mar. 28, 1893, to Mr. and Mrs. George Steil in Emmetsburg. She attended St. Mary's Academy and on June 27, 1917, she married Mr. Gappa in the Assumption church here. The couple became parents of four children, all of whom survive. They are Mrs. Ray (Marion) Beatty, Mrs. Gordon (Elaine) Smith and Joe Gappa, all of Emmetsburg, and Mrs. Robert (Shirley) Brown of Ruthven. Her husband, a prosperous farmer and livestock man, preceded her in death in 1957, and a young grandson also died during the past year. There are 29 grandchildren. Two sisters, Mrs. P.L. Godden of Emmetsburg and Mrs. F.O. Glanz of Maywood, Calif. also survive. Mrs. Gappa had a warm personality and was a devoted wife and mother. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America and was a faithful member of her church. She enjoyed being with her family and her grandchildren were a special delight to her. She and her late husband had a wide acquaintance in the county and had many friends. They had purchased an attractive lake-shore home in Emmetsburg a few years ago after retiring from their farm, but Mr. Gappa's death ended a long and affectionate companionship. Many friends mourn the death of Mrs. Gappa.
