In an Attempt to Capture Body Snatchers, the Former Sheriff of Cascade County is Shot By Conrad Boys. A terrible tragedy, the sequel of an act of ghoulish fiends who about a year and a half ago dug up the grave of the little son of Mr. and Mrs. Harfield Conrad and stole his body in an attempt to levy blackmail on its parents for the return of the remains, took place last night about 11 o'clock on the Fort Benton road between this city and Floweree. Ex-Sheriff, Joe Hamilton, one of the bravest men and most valued citizens of this county, was shot and killed by the Conrad boys who mistook him for one of the body snatchers who were trying to extort blackmail from them. Mr. Hamilton was one of the chief advisers of the boys in their trouble and helped to plan the attempt to capture the ghouls in which he lost his life. Indeed, it was his own suggestion, and due to his desire to render more efficient service in catching the scoundrels, that the plans were altered at the last minute to give him, as he thought, a better chance of affecting a capture, and thus the terrible tragedy became possible. In his eagerness to get the criminals he followed further along the road than the boys thought possible, and in the dusk they mistook him for one of the miscreants they were after, with fatal result, and one that will plunge them in grief for a long time to come. The whole of Cascade county where Joe Hamilton lived for many years and was one of our most honored and popular citizens will be plunged in grief over this sad story. He was a man of many virtues, brave as a lion, just and honorable in every action, a man whom his friends and all who knew him honored and respected. --- 11 Nat 1911 Had a Picturesque Career In the death of Josephus Hamilton Montana loses one of its pioneers and Cascade county is deprived of a man whose career has been replete with daring achievements as an officer of the law. Fearing nothing under the sun, Hamilton in his earlier days was just the kind of man needed to deal with the desperate characters that at times infested the country. In the old days, Hamilton's reputation was such that desperadoes feared him more than 10 ordinary men. He stood 6 feet tall, weighing 215 pounds in his prime, and had no rival for years in physical prowess. He wasn't much of a gun man. He ruled more by his unmatched nerve which enabled him to accomplish with ease what other men might require bloodshed to bring about. Born in Missouri. Mr. Hamilton was born in St. Joseph, Mo., in 1855, being 56 years old. In 1877 he went to Glendive, Mont., where he lived three years. He went to Missoula next, and in 1884 came to Great Falls. Here he started the Eclipse livery stable on First avenue south, which burned down three years later. He became a deputy sheriff under Sheriff W. H. Black of Choteau county, and the a deputy under Sheriff C. P. Downing of Cascade county. Twenty-two years ago he was elected sheriff, serving five years. After leaving office he went to ranching. For 17 years he has conducted a ranch 10 miles up the river from Ulm, but has also maintained a residence at 713 First avenue north. He owned considerable property. He is survived by a widow and a son, Oscar, 22 years old, a resident of this city. One brother, Will, lives in Kansas; another in St. Joseph, Mo.; and another, Erastus, is practicing law in Chicago. Three nephews reside in Butte. He was a Mason, and the funeral will be held Friday under the auspices of that order.
