The Madisonian,' Virginia City, MT 22 November 1912, page 1: Joshua Armitage, a resident of Virginia City in the early days, died last week at Los Angeles, Calif., and the body will be buried this week at Ennis beside the grave of his wife. He was one of the pioneer citizens of Montana, and was highly respected in all circles. He is survived by several sons and one daughter, the latter being Mrs. Winthrop Herndon. Jack and Andy are residents of the Big Hole valley, where they have extensive ranches in the vicinity of Wisdom. Another son, Ronnel, lives in the Lower Madison valley. Charles lives in the Upper Madison valley. J. Grey another son is in real estate business in Los Angeles. Joshua Armitage was born in Yorkshire, England, on August 19, 1838, the son of Isaac and Ann Armitage, the third son of five children. Isaac Armitage was a blacksmith in the Yorkshire coal mines, but emigrated to the United States in 1841, spending a year at Pittsburgh Pa., and thence going to Galena, Ill., where he and his wife were both buried. The son followed the trade of his father, being interested with him in the manufacture of wagons. In 1860 they joined the throng which crossed the plains to the supposed goldfields of Pike's Peak. Locating at Mountain City, they engaged in the manufacture of mining tools, the father returning to Illinois in 1863, and the son becoming a clerk in a Denver wholesale house. This position was retained until in the fall, when he made the trip with his family from Denver to Virginia City. Mr. Armitage resided here and was in business until 1867, when he went to the Salmon river mining district for a few months, returning as far as Helena to engage there in blacksmithing for the three years following. In 1864 Mr. Armitage was a member of the noted vigilance committee in Virginia City, and upon his arrival in Helena he was placed in command of the vigilantes there. In 1874 he was in charge of the vigilantes when the notorious desperados, Lecompte and Wilson, were hanged for their many crimes. In 1870 and 1871 he was a stationary engineer in the mines at Helena, and in odd hours conducted a music school in the camp. The following spring he was appointed Indian agent at the Blackfoot reservation, but returned to Helena to engage in the grocery business. In 1879 he engaged in cattle raising in Meagher county, but sold out in 1881 and again went to Helena. He conducted mines at Wickes until 1885, when he became a police magistrate at Helena, serving until 1887. In 1891 he was in the real estate business, which he had worked up to considerable magnitude. Disposing of this he engaged in gospel temperance work until 1892, when he went to Tacoma to help his sons start in the cattle business. Mr. Armitage established himself in the real estate business at Butte in 1899, associating with C. S. Jackman, as Jackman & Armitage. The enterprise prospered, but about 12 years ago he sold his interests on account of poor health, and moved into the Madison valley. About five years ago he was obliged to move to California, where he profited greatly by the lower altitude and the sea breezes. Joshua Armitage was always a good citizen. In politics he was a republican, in religion he affiliated with the Presbyterian church. He was a zealous worker for temperance and good morals. In Illinois, in 1857, he was married to Miss Martha Argent, the daughter of a pioneer and a soldier in the Blackhawk war. Many friends mourn the loss of a good citizen and a man whose energies were always devoted to the welfare of his adopted Treasure State. ~~ 'Pioneer Trails and Trials: Madison County 1863-1920,' 1976, by Madison County History Association, page 9-10 (excerpt): "Mr. and Mrs. Joshua Jesse Armitage. Nine children were born to this couple, seven boys and two girls. A boy and girl died in infancy. The other seven were William Albert, born in Galena, Illinois September 1859; Jesse Argent in Denver April 1862; Charles Harry in Virginia City August 1865; and John Thomas April 1871; and Joseph Rommel October 1876; George Comfort August 1878; and Mabel Nenette in Helena March 1881. In the fall of 1905, Mrs. Armitage was killed while returning home from Ennis with her husband (horse and buggy accident). In 1907, Joshua went to California where he profited by the lower climate and was near his son Jesse.
