Armitage, wife of Jesse Armitage, was killed and her husband quite badly injured. They were returning to their home on Indian creek from the Gilmer ranch near Ennis, where Mrs. Armitage had been visiting for a week past. When near the bridge which crosses Bear creek something about the harness gave way. Mr. Armitage got out of the vehicle and as he did so, gave the reins to Mrs. Armitage to hold. The horses became frightened and made a sudden start to run. Mr. Armitage attempted to get into the buggy and as he did so grabbed the reins. The buggy was overturned on the bridge and the occupants were thrown out with great force. It is the general opinion that Mrs. Armitage was thrown against the bridge with such force that the fall killed her, as she was very badly bruised. Her left leg was crushed and broken in several places. She fell from the bridge into the creek. It is not known how long she was in the water as Mr. Armitage was stunned by the fall. As soon as he regained consciousness he pulled Mrs. Armitage out of the water, she being dead at that time. Help soon arrived and the remains were taken to the Vetter home, which was near by. Mr. Armitage was taken at once to the home of his son on Indian creek, and Dr. Tidyman of Ennis was called. It was found that while Mr. Armitage was very badly bruised, he was not seriously injured. A telegram was received in this city, Sunday, by Rodney R. Herndon, the undertaker, asking him to go out to the valley to take charge of the funeral and the remains. Mrs. Armitage's maiden name was Martha Nenette Argent. She was born December 18, 1840, and was married to Jesse Armitage, October 29, 1857. Mr. and Mrs. Armitage were among the early settlers of this city. They are well known and favorably known. Mrs. Armitage was a devoted Christian woman and a member of the Presbyterian church. In her daily life her Christian faith and belief was exemplified. Her's was a noble character. She leaves to mourn her untimely death, besides her husband, six sons, William H., of Briston, Mont.; Jesse A., of Los Angeles, Calif.; Charles H., of Cameron, Mont.; John T., of Briston, Mont.; Rommel J., ad George C., of Cameron, Mont., and one daughter, Mabel N. (Armitage) Herndon, of Cameron, Mont. The funeral will be held Friday, when it is expected that all members of the family will be present. ~~ 'Progressive Men of Montana,' 1901, A. W. In Illinois, in 1857, Mr. Armitage was united in marriage with Miss Martha Argent, who was born in that state, the daughter of Daniel Argent, one of the pioneers of Illinois and an active participant in the Blackhawk war. Mrs. Armitage was a successful teacher before her marriage. Mr. and Mrs. Armitage have had nine children, seven are living, and are well established in life and all save one are ranchers."
