He moved to Missouri in the early settlement of this part of the country and lived one year southwest of town on the Dr. Hutt farm. Stevenson died at his residence in this city Wednesday evening, March 14, 1917. He was born in Warren county, Ohio, Dec. 7, 1843, and at the time of his death was aged 73 years 3 months and 7 days. He moved to Missouri in the early settlement of this part of the country and lived one year southwest of town on the Dr. Hutt farm. At that time there was a great deal of open prairie and he opened up a new farm about ten miles northwest of town and lived there until a few years ago when he moved into Skidmore where he has since lived. Coming to this country in very straitened financial circumstances he worked hard and secured a fine farm. He was in the civil war having served in the 36th Indiana Regiment. He leaves a wife and one son, Geo. T., living on the home farm, two brothers, John A. living northwest of town in Atchison county and Geo. C. of San Francisco, also a half brother, James, living in Indiana. Funeral services will be held at the M. E. church, Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock conducted by Rev. D. F. Harrison assisted by Revs. Reubin Barrett and W. H. Welton, after which the remains will be interred in the Masonic cemetery." ------ From the March 22, 1917 Skidmore New Era, page 1: "Obituary J. W. Stevenson was born Dec. 7, 1843 in Warren County, Ohio. When he was seven years of age the family moved to Randolph Co., Ind., where he grew to manhood. In 1862 he enlisted in the 36th Indiana Infantry serving till wounded in the battle of Stone River, Tenn. on Jan. 2, 1863. On Dec. 9, 1864 he was united in marriage to Miss Nancy Ellen Bodkin, who died Nov. 11, 1865. He was again united in marriage Nov. 11, 1869 to Miss Rachel Ann Hunt and coming to Missouri lived for a time on the Dr. Hutt farm southwest of Skidmore. In 1872 he settled on and began to improve the farm about ten miles northwest of Skidmore where the family lived for nearly 35 years. In January 1907 his health failing, he moved to Skidmore, were he died March 14, 1917 at the age of 73 years 3 months 7 days. Two children were born into this home, Geo. T. and Mary E. The latter departed this life Sept. 8, 1905. He was raised in the Friends Church, adhering to their teaching through life. At all times he walked in the well beaten path of righteousness and when fully conscious that he was nearing the last of earth, he appeared to be fully impressed with the idea that at the end of time eternity began, and that the bright faith which sustained him during those trying days of suffering would only grow brighter he journeyed toward the Infinite, and the final gloom of death be dispelled by the radiance of God's love. He leaves to mourn his departure a faithful wife, one son, six grand children, two brothers and one half brother. These are James Stevenson of Carles, Ind., John A. Stevenson of Skidmore, Mo., Geo. E. Stevenson of San Francisco, Cal. The funeral services were held at the M. E. church in Skidmore, Mo., Friday afternoon, March 16, 1917, conducted by Rev. D. F. Harrison, assisted by Revs. W. H. Welton and Reubin Barrett. Interment in Masonic cemetery, Skidmore."
