Description	:	Joe was the sixth of ten children born of Benjamin Franklin Sunderland (born 1824, died 1897) and Mary Ann Green (born 1834, died 1889). The family migrated from Pennsylvania to Kansas, where Joe met Mary Lois "May" Reed and they were wed on January 26, 1887 in Atchison County, Kansas. It was reported that the Reeds and Sunderlands had been friends in Pennsylvania before westward migration. As a side note, May's father, Alex Reed, eventually married Josiah's sister Jessie Amanda Sunderland Kollar Reed on December 24, 1902, in the Oklahoma Territory. The family migrated from Pennsylvania to Kansas, where Joe met Mary Lois "May" Reed and they were wed on January 26, 1887 in Atchison County, Kansas. It was reported that the Reeds and Sunderlands had been friends in Pennsylvania before westward migration. As a side note, May's father, Alex Reed, eventually married Josiah's sister Jessie Amanda Sunderland Kollar Reed on December 24, 1902, in the Oklahoma Territory. In 1889, a tornado hit the Kansas farm of Joe and May and destroyed their belongings. They gathered whatever they could and relocated to the area of Blockhouse, near Goldendale, Washington. Part of the trip was by train and the remainder by wagon train. Around 1892, Joe had his leg crushed in a logging accident and he eventually had to have it amputated. About 1893, they sold their place and moved to Medical Lake, Washington. Joe built bowling alleys in the Dalles and Medical Lake. He worked as a cattle buyer for a butcher shop in Medical Lake. In 1910, the family relocated to Canada, settling in the Dewberry area by 1916, where they farmed. Despite the hardships of their life, they had a good life together. May passed away in 1926. Joe eventually moved back to Spokane, Washington and later married a family friend, Jennie Robinson Franklin in 1932. She died in 1942. Joe spent time with various family members in his later years. Joe enjoyed his Gadsby area grandchildren and loved to work the garden with them. The grandkids lovingly called him Grandpa Frog because he could sure hop around in the garden. Joe enjoyed his family until he passed away in 1952.
