Mustered out on 03 May 1865 at Davenport, IA. ------------------------------------------ Josiah Wesley Martin was born in Fayette County, Ohio, November 18, 1844 and departed this life at his home in Birmingham, Iowa, age 76 years, three month and three days. He came with his parents to Davis County, Iowa. He was united in marriage to Sarah E. Lawson, December 27, 1866, and to this union was born six children. His wife and three children preceding him in death. All his married life has been spent in Jefferson and Van Buren counties. There remains to mourn his death, one son Clarence of Fairfield, two daughters, Mrs. Joe Wilson of Fairfield and Miss Zora of Birmingham. Also four sisters, Mrs. Sally Reneker of Douds, Mrs. Jane Stump of Leon, Iowa, Mrs. Harriet Stump of Libertyville and one brother, George Martin of Bentonsport; ten grandchildren, the oldest Lee Brannen, who gave his life while in active service of the U. S. army in the World War. He enlisted in the 17th Iowa infantry at Iowaville, in March 1862, giving three years, three months and three days unselfish service to his country. He was a member of the Grand Army Post of Fairfield. The service was held at the M. E. church on Saturday afternoon at two o'clock, conducted by Rev. J. L. Coleman, of the Presbyterian church, and the body laid to rest beside his wife in Maple Hill cemetery, who preceded him in death only about five weeks. Josiah's obituary as taken from the Fairfield Tribune (March 29, 1923) NOTE: There are some date discrepancies regarding Josiah's date of marriage. The original obituary states the date of marriage as December 17, 1855 (which is an obvious error). The Jefferson County records show the marriage license was issued December 15, 1866 but the entry, dated Feb. 5, 1867, states the marriage took place December 17, 1867. Since the entry date was February 1867 it appears the December 1867 is an error and should be December 17, 1866. There is also a question as to his age on the date of death. If he was born November 18, 1844 and died March 1923 he would have been a few months past his 78th birthday. The original obit lists his age as 76 yrs. 3 mos. and 3 days.
