Everett, Ex-Judge, Dies Funeral Saturday For Retired Jurist Judge Emmit E. Everett, 74, of 401 S. Jameson-av, former Allen-co Common Pleas court judge, died at 11:15 p.m. Wednesday in the Ada Nursing home. Death followed an illness of two months. Judge Everett, before his retirement, was active in local and state civic programs. He was one of the first members of the state parole board in 1939. He is remembered by many as the John Dillinger gang trials judge and for his ruling on building and loan foreclosure suits during the banking crisis. The former jurist was born in Monroe-tp, Allen-co. His parents were pioneer residents of this county. He was graduated from the old Lima college in 1900 and Ohio State university. He held bachelor of science, bachelor of pedagogy, and a bachelor of laws degrees and was admitted to the Bar in 1904. Judge Everett first became interested in public life when he was elected justice of peace in Lima in 1908, a position in which he served until 1916. Prior to this he had taught in public schools for a year and was an instructor in a reform school in Eldora, Iowa. He was elected to the Common Pleas bench in 1930 and served until 1939. In 1939 he was named to the state parole board, a post he held until 1945. In addition to his professional affiliations, Judge Everett was a member of several fraternal orders. He was a past grand high priest of the Grand Chapter of Ohio of Masons; former president of Lima Association of Scottish Rite Masons; a member of the Scottish Rite, Valley of Toledo, El Karan Grotto, Shawnee Commandery, Knights Templar, No. 14, of which he was past commander; Lima Council Royal and Select Masters No. 20 and its thrice illustrious master; past high priest of Lima chapter, Royal Arch Masons, No. 49, and past master of Lima Lodge No. 205 Free and Accepted Masons. He was a former member of the Benevolent and Protective of Elks, the Loyal Order of Moose and the Maccabees. He was a member of Trinity Methodist church. Judge Everett was married Aug. 26, 1900 to Gracia Crum. She died Aug. 23, 1949. Surviving are two sons, Paul E., 1525 Oakland-pkwy, and Howard, 214 N. Washington-st, a Lima attorney; two grandchildren; a brother, Grover, Columbus Grove, and a sister, Mrs. Alzada Stockler, Cairo. The body will remain at Davis-Miller and Son funeral home for services at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Cathedral chapel. Dr. J. Ira Jones will officiate and burial will be in Memorial Park cemetery. Scottish Rite services will be conducted at the funeral home at 8 p.m. Friday. (published in The Lima News, Thursday, June 15, 1950)
