There was but one small store kept there at that time by a Mr. Addison Gillett. Public worship was held in the old Court House by the M.E. and Congregational Churches, each alternate Sabbath. He was elected to the Legislature in 1848; in 1850, appointed Treasurer and Recorder to fill the vacancy of W. K. Whittlesey, deceased; was subsequently elected to fill the office for two successive terms; followed farming during the interval till 1852, when he was elected County Judge, which office he held six years; was also elected Recorder for two years, and one year as County Auditor, under the law establishing Circuit Courts; he also acted as Collector of Internal Revenue from 1862 to 1865; came to Inland Township, where he now resides, in 1870; married Annetta M. Ennis Oct. 9, 1827; had six children living and three dead—Marjory E., Samuel B., Rebecca E., Wilbur F., Jac. C., Mary L., Anna and Francis, Wilbur F.; Francis and Mary are dead. Jac. C. served in the late rebellion in Co. B, 24th Ia. Inf.; Samuel B. served one year in Co. G, 14th Ia. Inf.; was discharged for disability Oct. 30, 1862. Tipton Advertiser 9 Jan 1879 pg 3 BETTS - At his home in Inland, Dec. 30th, 1878, J.C. Betts, in the 74th year of his age. The subject of this obituary was born in Franklin county, Pennsylvania, Oct. 16th, 1805. He was a resident of Iowa for thirty-nine years, and became a resident of Cedar county in 1846. He was once identified with the public interests of the county: served in the State Legislature, and also as county Judge, Treasurer, Recorder, and Auditor. Those who knew him most intimately as a public officer, bear testimony of the accuracy and impartial disposition of all his public business. The expressions of sympathy that have been offered since his death are unmistakable evidence of the esteem in which he was held by his aquaintances. The reverses of fortune which he experienced during his life were indeed many, and at times almost to heavy to be borne; yet amid all of these he evinced a patience and at the same time such determination to conquer that should be a lesson of rebuke to those so easily cast down and discouraged. The services of father Betts in the M.E. Church have been constant for fifty-two years. These are the words written by his own hand in the family bible: "Sept. 15th, 1826 This day united myself to the M.E. Church during my natural life. Only that my name might at the same time be written in the Lamb's Book of Life." Since that time he has been a devoted member and a earnest worker. His death was peaceful and glorious, such a death bed scene as few are permitted to visit. He said that God would gather him home. Told his family the time had come and he must go, not to worry about him. He was perfectly conscious to the last breath. The family has lost a father, who was patient and devoted. The Church has parted with a constant friend and advisor. The community mourns the abscence of an example and guide. Yet we all live in hopes of a final meeting in that land where God shall wipe away all tears, where there will be no more sorrow or crying and where parting will be no more.
