JUDGE MITCHELL HAS PASSED ON ------------------------------ Died Early This Morning of Heart Attack---Was Elected Tuesday A sudden heart attack today claimed the life of Grant Mitchell, a few hours after he had been assured of re-election as probate judge of Harvey county on the Republican ticket. He was 72 years old. His death, attributed by friends to the strain of the campaign, occurred shortly after he had gone to the courthouse this morning. He had been driven from his home at 401 East Eighth street by L. P. Graves, a neighbor, as had been his custom each day. After reaching the courthouse he went to the county clerk's office to scan the election returns that were being posted and collapsed shortly afterward. He was rushed to Axtell Christian hospital in an ambulance and passed away a short time later. A resident of Newton the past 26 years, Mr. Mitchell came to this city from ElDorado and engaged in the abstracting business here until his election to his first term as probate judge in 1930. He served three consecutive terms and at the beginning of 1937 returned to abstract work. He was elected again in 1937 and would have completed his fourth term next January. His death deeply shocked his many friends and workers in the Republican party. Last may he suffered a heart attack and was confined to his home for a few weeks. He recovered sufficiently to resume his duties and had been at his desk almost daily since then, altho friends had known he was not in good health. Judge Mitchell was born October 3, 1868 in St. Paris, Ohio, and observed his 72nd birthday last month. His early education was obtained in the Ohio schools and he later was graduated form law school of the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. During and following the World War he went overseas and served as Y. M. C. A. secetary. His work identified him with the British R. A. F., altho his service was not on a combat nature. Later he served with the Allied army of occupation in Germany in Y. M. C. A. lecture work. He was an active member of the Methodist Episcopal church, the Boy Scouts and took an interest in numerous other community enterprises. He was known as a courteous, dependable public official to the many persons who came in contact with the probate judge's office. In addition to handling the large volume of business relating to probating estates, Mr. Mitchell was in charge of cases of a juvenile delinquency nature. He is survived by h is widow, of the home. There are no children. Mr. Mitchell was the last member of his family, altho leaves some nephews and nieces at other places. Funeral services will be conducted Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Methodist church with Rev. G. L. Coppedge in charge. Rev. S. W. Keller, will assist. Interment will be in Greenwood cemetery.
