When she was six months old the family moved to a farm east of Fedora, South Dakota. She was the oldest of six children. She attended Eastern State Normal School for one year and earned a teaching certificate to teach in rural schools. In 1937 she obtained her first teaching job at Prairie Flower School (north of Fedora). She taught there for one year and then taught for three years at Klein School, near Oldham, South Dakota. While teaching at Klein School she boarded with Walt and Olive Sanem. This is where, at a party for a student, she met Aubry Bickett. They were married on December 11, 1941, at Huron, South Dakota. Aubry left for basic training February 11, 1942, and Judy finished out the year and in May 1942 followed Aubry to Tulahoma, Tennessee; then to Fort Lewis, Washington. When Aubry left to serve in WWII and was sent to New Guinea in June 1942, Judy returned to the family farm. Aubry was honorably discharged on December 1, 1945. The small family returned to South Dakota, where they farmed southwest of Oldham. While there, Judy again taught at the Kline School for a year and then Hill School in Kingsbury County for a year. In 1952 they had a farm sale and ran the Allis Chalmers dealership in Estelline, South Dakota, until 1955. While in Estelline, Judy worked in the bakery and taught kindergarten for the Estelline Public Schools. Judy next taught the 5th–8th grade students in Dempster, South Dakota, and then at another country school in Hamelin County. At this time the family moved back to the Schrooten farm east of Fedora. They eventually purchased this farm and farmed there until 1976. In 1958 and 1959, Judy taught 6th-8th grades in Argonne, South Dakota. She continued to teach until she retired in 1976. Aubry and Judy sold the farm in 1976 and moved “to town” in Howard. They wintered in Zapata, Texas, and spent summers in Howard. After they celebrated their 50th anniversary, Aubry passed away in 1992. After Aubry passed away, Judy wintered in Tucson, Arizona, and helped Leta and Buck with their old west business. Judy is proceeded in death by her husband, Aubry; parents, Arnold John and Pauline; brother, Eugene; brother, Raymond (died in infancy); and sisters, Mildred and Sara Ann. She is survived by her daughter, Leta (Buck) Berberich of Tucson; three grandchildren, Paula (Peter) Hoffman of Hinckley, MN, Chad (Lisa) Berberich of Terrell, TX, and Jonas (Tammy) Berberich of Janesville, MN; 10 great-grandchildren: Stuart, Lexy (Ryan) Schmidt, Zachary, Aaron, John, Kylie, Brayden, Sammy, Dylan, and Noah; two great-great-grandsons: Hamilton Schmidt and Augustus Berberich; her sister, Gola Hunter of CA; other relatives; and many, many nieces and nephews. Judith loved her family. She also loved teaching, playing cards of any type, music, serving at church, and traveling. She liked to have company where she could visit and have coffee. She volunteered at the One Room School House museum and loved to tell stories of her life during WWII and in eastern South Dakota. She will lovingly remain in the hearts of all who knew her.
