Obituary Although close friends were aware of the serious condition of Mrs. J. W. Turner, wife of Dr. J. W. Turner of this city, the announcement of her death at mid-afternoon Saturday, August 26, came as a shock to the immediate family, relatives and friends. In poor health for some time with a heart ailment she was bedfast for only a week's time. Mrs. Turner was for many years active in the several clubs which had as their aim the civic progress in the home community . She served as president, as well as in other offices, in several of these clubs and was charter member of the Sterling Chapter of Eastern Star, Monday Evening Club and the Sterling Woman's club and possibly others. She was also a member of the Royal Neighbors and the American Legion Auxiliary. She was a life-long member of the Methodist church. In recent years failing health had curtailed the activities of the deceased but she had retained an interest in the projects promoting improvements of a civic nature. Besides her interest in club work she enjoyed her home and was always ready to help her neighbors and was gracious to new-comers in the home town in which she took such a deep interest. Julia Merrick was born at Adams, Nebr., in Gage county, August 15, 1876, the daughter of Homer Joseph Merrick and Lucy A. (Lyons) Merrick, early pioneers of that community. She attended the public schools of Adams where she completed the work offered in the high school. On April 11, 1895 she was married at the home of her parents in Adams to J. W. Turner. After a residence of a year in Adams where Dr.Turner practiced medicine, they moved to Sterling in April, 1896, and have since made this city their home. The deceased had one desire to live to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their marriage next April. Those to mourn her passing besides her husband, are two children , Norman M. Turner, A.M. 1/c U.S.N., and Mrs. Adelaide Turner Rogers,wife of Alfred J. Rogers, S 1/c, armed guard, U.S.N., and two grandchildren, Beverly Ann Rogers and Turner Alfred Rogers; one sister, Mrs. Ralph B. Winters of Beatrice; one brother, Major Homer Curtiss Merrick of Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and a host of relatives and friends. All are extended the deepest sympathy in their loss. Funeral services were held at the home Wednesday afternoon, August 30, at 2:30 o'clock with Rev. W. H. Clark of the Methodist church officiating. The interment was in the Sterling cemetery.
