W. Turner, Friday evening, at his home in Sterling. He and his housekeeper, Miss Linda Hoehne, were watching a boxing match on television when without warning the final summons came to him and he passed away. Fifty-seven years of his life were spent in Sterling, where he won for himself the deepest affection of the hundreds who knew him as their family doctor, friend and confident. Although his health had failed in recent years he found it impossible to give up the practice which was a vital part of his life, and until his last day he was taking care of patients just as he had for so many, many years. James W. Turner was born at Bay City, Mich., on July 4, 1869, the son of Thomas T. Turner and Rhoda Decker Turner, early pioneers of that community. He attended public school there and later as a young man taught school, alternating his work efforts between teaching school and working in a local pharmacy in his efforts to get the money necesary to attend medical school. In 1893 he was graduated from the Cincinnati School of Medicine and early in 1894 came west to start his medical career at Adams, Nebr. On April 11, 1895 he was married to Julia Merrick and after a year's residence in Adams, where he practiced medicine, they moved to Sterling in April, 1896. In his youth Dr. Turner was a member of the Congregational church, but after coming to Sterling he became a member of the Methodist church here. He was a member of Sterling Lodge No. 70 A.F.& A.M. and of Eastern Star Chapter No. 128 of Sterling. In the spring of 1949 the Masons presented the doctor with the fifty year button and the Star presented him with the fifty year pin. Community activities always interested the doctor and he took part in them for many years. In recent years he spent more time at home, except for occasional trips to Lincoln to visit in the homes of his children. Friday evening, March 6, 1953, he slipped peacefully away in his home at 9:45 o'clock while watching television. Death had come to him at the age of 83 years, 8 months and 2 days. Mrs. Turner preceded her husband in death. Surviving are one son, Norman M. Turner, and one daughter, Mrs. Alfred J. Rogers, both of Lincoln; one daughter-in-law; one son-in-law; three grandchildren, Mrs. Beverly Ann Weekly of Lincoln, Pfc. Turner A. Rogers of Fort Riley, Kansas and James E. Rogers at home; one great-granddaughter, Georgeann Weekly of Lincoln; and one sister, Mrs. Goldie Francis of Jaroso, Colo., also many othr relatives. Funeral servies were held from his late home at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon with Rev. E. S. Pangborn of Clatonia in charge. Mr. Pangborn was minister of the Sterling Methodist church a number of years ago.
