Ruddell, Dead Our city and community was saddened last Saturday afternoon, May 18, by the death of one of our highly esteemed citizens, Mrs. W. A. Ruddell, which occurred at 3:00 o'clock, at her home four miles west and two north of Skidmore. She had been sick about five weeks with neuralgia of the heart, but was not considered in any immediate danger. She was taken with a very sudden and severe attack and passed away while Mr. Ruddell was in Skidmore and his son, Hays, who is living with his father, was in the field at work. No one was in the house at the time of death but the small child of Mr. and Mrs. Hays Ruddell. The baby began crying and the mother, who was out in the yard, went into the house to the child. Then it was discovered that the Death Angel had entered their home and taken the aged mother and wife. It was a great shock to the husband and children and the sympathy of the community is extended to the sorrowing relatives in their affliction. The funeral was conducted by Rev. Reuben Barrett, assisted by Rev. Hicks of Mound City, at the Methodist Episcopal church at Burr Oak, Sunday afternoon. Interment in the cemetery near the church. Obituary Julia Ann Hays was born in Kentucky, Sept. 25, 1825; died, May 18, 1901, aged 75 years, 7 months, and 23 days. She was the oldest of seven children, three of whom survive her; Joseph Hays of Macomb, Ill., Levi Hays of St. Joseph, and Susan Barger of Muscatine, Iowa. At the age of seven she moved with her parents to Ill. She was married to William A. Ruddell Oct. 11, 1848. To this union was born 11 children, 9 of whom are living: Hays, W. L., Hester A. Ward, Stella Brown, Mary Garnett, Edward of Fairfax, Ferdinand of Leota, Oklahoma, Grant of St. Joseph, and Mrs. Lou Ward of Barnard, Kansas. The two dead are Mrs. Martha Joel, who died June 6, 1879, and Joseph W., who died in infancy. In the year 1865 they moved from Ill. to Nodaway county, Missouri and settled near Burr Oak Grove and have lived in the neighborhood ever since. In the fall of 1872 they moved to their late home where she died. She was converted in childhood and joined the M. E. church at the age of twelve years. The spirit of her Master was always shown in her quiet home life. She was a faithful wife, a loving mother, and a kind and helpful neighbor. She leaves an aged husband and many relatives and friends to mourn her loss."
