Michigan. Jacob was born in 1872 and he died in 1957. Jacob is the son of Peter Rhoades and his wife Eunice Swink. Julia's father-in-law Peter Rhoades was a 14 year old orphaned boy when he drove a wagon to Michigan in 1852, for George G. Rough, then he lived with the George G. Rough family for several years. Many years later, after Julia's death, Julia's husband Jacob Rhoades "boarded" at the home of Alois Letcher, who had purchased the George G. Rough home in Portage Prairie in 1919. Julia's obituary states that her husband Jacob Rhoades was from Galena township, LaPorte County Indiana. ----------------------------------- Before they were married, Jacob had lived with his parents, in the 1880 census of Bertrand township, Berrien County Michigan (in Portage Prairie). The 1900, 1910, 1920, and 1930 census', show Jacob and Juliet Rhoades living in LaPorte County Indiana. --- The obituary for her brother William F. Dragoo in 1903, states that Julia and her husband were living in Kingsbury, LaPorte County Indiana. ------- In her father's obituary in 1919, Julia and her husband are listed as living in Three Oaks, Berrien Co. MI (West of Galien, and Buchanan, Michigan). ------------------------------- 1. She is listed as "Julia" in 1880 census. 2. She is listed as "Juliette" on her marriage certificate. 3. She signed her name as "Julia" in her sister Cleta "Cleo" Dragoo's autograph book in (1891-1893). 4. She is listed as "Julie E." in her father Liberty U. Dragoo's pension application file. 5. She is listed as "Julia" Rhoades on her headstone, and in her obituary. ---------------------------------- Jacob and Julia Rhoades had a son Burlan L. Rhoades (of Berrien Springs, MI], who was born July 19, 1900. Burlan was married on July 7, 1928, in Berrien County Michigan, to Jean Robertson. Burlan died June 19, 1990. His obituary was published in the "Journal Era" newspaper in Berrien Springs, MI. Burlan is buried next to his wife Jean R. Rhoades, in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Berrien Springs, MI (Block E, lot # 5, Space # 22). --------------------------------- Julia died at her home on Cleveland Ave., in Weesaw township, 4 and 1/2 miles North of Galien, in Berrien County Michigan [West of Buchanan]. Julia died of pneumonia, on her 69th birthday. -------------------------------------- Julia's obituary was published in the "Galien River Gazette", in Galien, MI on Jan. 15, 1942, page 7, column 5, and in "The News-Paladium" newspaper in Benton Harbor, Michigan, on Sat. Jan. 10, 1942, page 7. It reads as follows: ------ DEATH TAKES MRS. JULIA RHOADES ON HER 69TH BIRTHDAY. Three Oaks, Jan. 10 - Funeral service for Mrs. Julia Rhoades 69, whose death occurred Friday at 11:10 a.m. at her home 4 and 1/2 miles north of Galien, on Cleveland Ave., will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 oclock fast time at the Connelly Funeral Home. The Rev. J. N. Thomas, of Rolling Prairie, will officiate and burial will be in the Buchanan cemetery [Oak Ridge Cemetery]. Mrs. Rhoades, was born in Buchanan January 9, 1873, and died on her birthday at her home following an illness of three years. She was married in Buchanan April 28,1897 to Jacob Rhoades, of Galena Township, LaPorte county [IN]. She was the daughter of Liberty and Celestia Dragoo, who were pioneers of Buchanan [MI]. Besides her husband, she is survived by one son, Burlin [Burlan] Rhoades, Berrien Springs: one sister, Mrs. Clarence [Cleta, nicknamed Cleo] Upham, Buchanan: one brother, Clyde Dragoo, St. Joseph, [MI]. The body is at the Connelly funeral home where friends may call.
