Francis of this city answered the final summons last Friday afternoon about three o'clock following a two week's illness due to a cerebral hemorhage. The day preceding her illness, Mrs. Francis had worked in her garden and did not complain of feeling badly, although she had not been in the best of health since she suffered a slight stroke about a year ago. Neighbors, friends and relatives were saddened to hear of her serious condition from which she never fully regained consciousness. All that was humanly possible to make her comfortable was carried out by her loving daughter and family and neighbors until the hour that she quietly slipped away into the Land of her Redeemer. Her step-son, Ira, of Jaroso spent a week in Sterling to be near Mrs. Francis whom he knew and loved as a mother. Mrs. Francis was a true example of a real neighbor and will be missed by the large circle of friends she had made since coming to Sterling, because of her neighborliness and interest in others. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church, Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock with Rev. L. V. Snodgrass in charge who paid high tribute to the deceased in his sermon. A male quartet which included John Janssen, Herman Janssen, Dr. V. D. Arnold and Herman Floerke with Mrs. K. W. Oakley accompanist, sang, "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" and "That Beautiful Land". Those acting as pallbearers were John Janssen, Brunke G. Schmidt, Herman Kruger, Dr. D. B. James, K. W. Oakley and Henry Pickett. Interment was made in the Sterling Cemetery. Julia E. Kress, daughter of Henry and Mary Jane Kress, was the 7th child of 11 children and was born October 29, 1873 in Manchester, Ohio and departed this life on Friday September 29, 1939 in Sterling, Nebraska at the age of 65 years and 11 months. She grew to womanhood in Ohio and during that time became a member of the McCollins' Chapel, a small country church in that locality. Sometime later she was united in marriage to William H. Lang on November 1, 1893 in Ohio. To this union one child, Mary Bee was born. On November 15, 1903 Mr. Lang departed this life and on May 31st 1905 Mrs. Lang was united in marriage to Nelson B. Francis, at West Union, Ohio. They then moved to Nebraska and settled on a farm north of Sterling, where they lived until the death of Mr. Francis on May 18, 1929. Mrs. Francis then moved to Sterling and occupied a new home which she had built, and had enjoyed thru the years. She lived in close communion with her Lord. She was a faithful attendant and supporter of the Methodist Church. She leaves to mourn her passing her daughter Mrs. Harry Reutter and husband and two grandsons Lester and Eldon, all of Sterling, Nebr. Six sisters, Malinda Pence, Lidia E. Kress, Cora Cochran and Leulla Reeves all of Manchester, Ohio, Bell Dawley of Cherry Fork, Ohio and Josephine Kuntz of Georgetown, Ohio. A step-son, Ira E. Francis of Jarosa, Colorado, who recently visited her before her death, is also one of the bereaved. She will be missed by a host of loved ones and friends she has gained throughout her life.
