She grew up in the Geneva, Iowa, area where she attended school. She graduated from Ellsworth Community College with a certificate in teaching. On June 23, 1949 Julia married Robert E. Hess of Williams, Iowa. They settled on a farm north of Dows, where they raised their four children. In 1979 the couple built their home in the town of Dows, retiring from the farm due to Robert’s health. Julia owned and operated Dows Variety Store for several years. She was active in her church and community. In 2010 they moved to Cedar Ridge in Iowa Falls. Julia Hess is survived by a son, Duane (Mary Kaye) Hess of Dows, Iowa; three daughters, LeAnn (John) Snyder of Dows, Iowa, Patricia (Denny) Kuhlers of Iowa Falls, Iowa and Lori (Howard) Hoffman of Johnston, Iowa; ten grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; brothers: Herman (Lavonne) Off and Harley (Harriet) Off both of Iowa Falls, Iowa and Larry Off of St. George, Utah and a sister in-law, Miriam Off of Iowa Falls, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her husband of sixty seven years, Robert; her parents; her brothers, Jacob and Robert; a sister, Lucille in infancy; sisters in-law, Rosalee Off and Alice Off and a son in-law, Jeff Schram.
