Read More	JULIA NICKOLENA TEMME December 6, 1919 ~ July 31, 2017 Julia Nickolena Temme was born on December 6, 1919, in Cosmopolis, Washington, to John and Ivanica (Kursar) Kapitanovich. She passed away peacefully after a brief illness on July 31, 2017, in Vancouver, Washington. Julia's family moved to east Vancouver, Washington (Burton Road area) in 1920 and she lived most of her life in Clark County, with a few years spent in Oregon and northern Washington while her husband worked in the construction industry. Julia lived a very active life, full of adventure and personal accomplishments. She was a yell leader at Union High School and played on a variety of girls sports teams at a time when it wasn't the popular thing for girls to do. Julia was a proud team member of the girls' basketball, softball, and volleyball teams and continued on with softball after graduating from high school. She also learned to ski and golf and with her love of continued learning, she independently took flying lessons, but never completed the requirement to obtain her pilot's license. When the men were away fighting during World War II, Julia was recruited to play on a "League of Our Own" women's softball team. She made the difficult decision to work for the war effort at home as a welder in the Kaiser Shipyards rather than to participate in the unique woman's league. During this time, she learned to ride a motorcycle as a result of the gas rationing. Before the birth of her first child she gave up riding motorcycles, but always loved the thought of exploring the country on a motorcycle again. Julia was a Cub Scout leader for her sons and coached her daughter's volleyball and basketball teams in grade school. Little did she know, that during her 17 year tenure as a school bus driver in Ridgefield, Vancouver, and Burlington, all in Washington State, how much of an impact she would have on the lives of the children who rode her bus. As she continued with her competitive spirit, she won bus driver competitions for her skill in driving buses. Julia was also an accomplished seamstress and carpenter. She and her husband built two cabins and four houses together. Her curiosity for the ways things worked and her desire to create and build something new, helped to fulfill her desire of lifelong learning. The family financial advisor once commented that he thought she was the smartest person he had ever met. Julia loved people and she loved helping others. You would always see her including everyone at parties and would bring joy, comfort, caring, and a welcoming spirit to everyone she met. One of her favorite quotes was "Be kind to everyone; you never know what struggles someone is facing." It is said that in the end it isn't the accomplishments people remember most about you, but how you make them feel. Julia always accepted people for who they were and showed an abundance of compassion and love to all she met. Little did she know she would always leave people with a little bit of her compassion and her undying perseverance. Julia married George A. Temme, Sr. on February 7, 1942. They enjoyed 75 years of marriage and traveled the world together. They traveled to Europe, China, Australia, New Zealand, and Central America, and over much of the United States and Canada. They gave each of their children a desire to explore the world. Julia made friends wherever she went and wherever they lived. Julia is survived by her husband, George; and her children, George Jr., Steve (Barbara), Anita, Julie Mettler (John), and Gregory/Pete (Tanya). Also surviving her are nine grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Sork; and brother-in-law, Roger Haldeman. Julia was preceded in death by her parents; her son, John; grandson, Ramon Temme; great-granddaughter, Haley Mettler; her brothers, Anthony and George Kapitanovich; and sisters, Helen Stolle and Rose Haldeman. A funeral Mass for Julia was held on Tuesday, August 8, 2017, at Saint Joseph Catholic Church, 400 S. Andresen Road, Vancouver, WA, 98661. A rosary was prayed. Interment followed at Mother Joseph Cemetery, 1401 E. 29th Street, Vancouver, WA 98663. A lunch was provided after the service. The family requested attendees wear red or pink (her favorite colors) or Hawaiian shirts to help celebrate her life. Published in The Columbian, Vancouver, Washington on August 4, 2017
