Meily, 98, resident of Lima 80 years and former instructor in Lima public schools, died at the home of her son, James Robb Meily, 1128 Hazel-av, following an illness of five months. Death came at 7:25 a.m. Wednesday. She was born in Troy and came to Lima at the age of 18 with her parents, James T. and Elizabeth E. Orbison. She was married to Ringgold W. Meily, a member of an early pioneer family in Lima and former postmaster here. He preceded her in death in 1914. Almost immediately upon her arrival in Lima, Mrs. Meily began her teaching career. Her first school was located in the old West-bldg, which was located where Central high school now stands. The building at that time housed all of Lima's public schools. Mrs. Meily also was on hand to watch the erection of the East-bldg, located on the grounds now occupied by Garfield school, N. Pine-st. She finished her career in the West-bldg in the elementary grades. Two articles, one entitled "The Story of My School," and "The Early Social Life of Lima" were written by Mrs. Meily and now are preserved by the Allen-co Historical society. She was a member of the Market Street Presbyterian church, the erection of which she watched. She was a charter member of the Missionary society of the church and recently was elected honorary member of the National Presbyterian Board of Foreign Missions of the church. Other clubs and civic groups with which she was affiliated included the Twentieth Century club. Mrs. Meily was the last member of the group of 18 women who formed the group 58 years ago. In earlier years, while instructor in the Lima schools, she was a member of the Dickens club, a group of Lima teachers who met to study the works of Charles Dickens. It is believed to have been Lima's first reading club, having been formed 78 years ago. She was a member of the Ladies Board of Managers of the Lima City hospital, now Memorial hospital; also an active member of the women's auxiliary of the Lima YMCA. Surviving are two sons, James, at whose home she died and Fred R., 329 N. West-st; two grandchildren, Mrs. Andrew L. Lenga, Berea; and David R. Meily, Pontiac, Mich.; three great-grandchildren, Helen, Martha and Sarah Meily, all of Pontiac. The body will remain at the Chiles and Son funeral home where services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Friday with Rev. Arthur M. Romig officiating and Rev. Harold F. Stoddard assisting.
