Description	:	Julian Joseph Brodland, was born August 4, 1945 to Joseph and Juliet (Jensen) Brodland. He was the third and only son of four children. Julian attended grade school at Molan #60 in Hutchinson County and graduated from Augustana Academy in Canton in 1963, after which he began his lifelong occupation of farming and dairying on the family farm south of Freeman. He was the third and only son of four children. Julian attended grade school at Molan #60 in Hutchinson County and graduated from Augustana Academy in Canton in 1963, after which he began his lifelong occupation of farming and dairying on the family farm south of Freeman. In 1965, Julian enlisted in the Army National Guard 153rd Engineer Battalion in Tripp, SD, attaining the rank of Sgt. E5 and completed his service in 1971. On June 28, 1970, he married JoAnn Wagner (the girl next door) at the United Methodist Church in Olivet, SD and they enjoyed 48 wonderful years together. Julian and JoAnn were blessed with 2 children, Kerri Ann in 1977 and Matthew Scott in 1978. Julian always loved farming and animals, and had a special interest in horses of any size, from shetlands to work horses. He seldom missed watching “Gentle Giants” on Sunday afternoon RFD TV. Julian and JoAnn moved to Freeman in 2004 but continued dairying and farming, making many trips back and forth until it was necessary for him to start kidney dialysis. Still, he could always keep busy mowing grass in the summer and pushing snow in the winter with his skid loader. Making peppernuts for Schmeckfest was also something he could do that helped pass the winter months quickly. Julian was baptized and confirmed at Salem Lutheran Church , of rural Freeman where his grandfather, Rev. O.H. Brodland had been a Charter Pastor. Currently he was a faithful member of the Freeman Missionary Church, and was also active with Gideons International for 40 years. He loved the Lord, and we are grateful for the assurance that he is in the presence of his Savior Jesus. Julian was a loving husband, brother, father, and grandfather who had a kind and humble nature; never complaining, but choosing to look on the bright side. He entered his eternal home on April 10, 2018 at Avera Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls at the age of 72. We, his family, are so grateful and blessed for having Julian in our lives. He loved and greatly treasured the years he had watching the grandchildren grow up as he and JoAnn babysat them, having them come over after school, driving them to and from piano lessons, watching them play sports, and just talking with them about farming and telling stories of the old days. Julian is survived by his wife, JoAnn; daughter, Kerri and husband Mark Swensen; grandchildren Micah 16, Jacob 14, and Erica 10, all of Freeman; his sisters, Darlene Hofer, Viborg; Joyce (Delmar) Wevik, Chamberlain; and Lyla Sonnenfeld, Yankton. He was also very close to , and enjoyed the many times spent with all his Brodland and Jensen cousins. He is preceded in death by his son, Matthew, in 1994 at the age of 15, his parents Joseph and Juliet; and brothers-in-law, Juel Hofer and Paul Sonnenfeld.
