"Attempting to avoid a crash with an automobile occupied by Mr. and Mrs. H.O. Kelley and family, Justin S. Fortier, 41, familiarly known here as "Jess" Fortier, was fatally injured shortly after 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon when the truck he was driving was thrown on its side two miles south of Red Bluff. Fortier was hurled bodily from the truck and struck on his head. His neck was broken. He died in front of the Sisters' hospital.
"A second occupant of the truck, H.B. Atchinson of Chico, who was also hurled from the truck, escaped with numerous bruises and abrasions.
"The accident happened when Fortier, who was en route to Redding, swerved his truck into the ditch in an effort to avoid the Kelley machine, which was about to enter the highway from the Red Bluff-Susanville lateral. The truck swung around, throwing out both of the occupants.
"Fortier was taken to the hospital by Kelley and died in front of the institution while being held by Atchinson. He failed to regain consciousness.
"Fortier, who is widely known in this district, where he had spent his entire life, was employed by the General Petroleum corporation as district salesman for the Redding territory. He had been in the employ of the corporation as district salesman for the Redding territory. He had been in the employ of the corporation the past year and a half. Before that time he had been employed by the Associated Oil company.
"Atchinson and Fortier left here at 3 o'clock and were en route to Redding with a truck load of household effects. Fortier planned to return to Chico late last evening and with his wife, was to leave for Redding, where the two were to make their home. He was assisted in loading the truck by Atchinson, who was accompanying him on the trip to help with the household goods at Red Bluff, where Fortier had rented a house.
"Fortier, who was born September 11, 1884, in Glenn county, is survived by the widow, Mrs. Beatrice Fortier; the mother Mrs. Marcella Fortier, three sisters, Mrs. Mae Girard, Mrs. L. Girard and Mrs. Ella Boucher, and two brothers, Charles I., Herman Fortier, all of whom reside in Chico.
"The body is being held at Red Bluff by Coroner Charles E. Fish, who will conduct an inquest this morning.
"Although funeral arrangements are incomplete, the body will be brought to Chico for interment. The Westfall funeral home will have charge of the arrangements." - Contributed by Carolyn Dowd, January 4, 2021. |
