She was known in her native Orangeburg and among musicians in South Carolina for her lovely hymns, ballads of the Edisto, and for her Easter anthem "Our Lord Has Risen Today." In April 1958, the South Carolina Federation of Music Clubs Convention presented a program dedicated to two of the state's leading composers, Justine Hundley Culler and Marie Epting Jennings. Featured songs composed by Justine H. Culler included: "God Made My Heart to Sing" and "There Is Such Sadness in My Soul" performed by Susan Hundley Dickinson and the Clemson Quartet under the direction of Hugh McGarrity, Director of Music at Clemson College. The Anderson College chorus sang "Our Lord Is Risen Today." These and other songs have been featured on many South Carolina composer programs throughout the state and were placed in the South Caroliniana Library of the University of South Carolina. (The Columbia (S.C.) State, April 27, 1958) Mrs. Culler was born in Orangeburg on June 23, 1911, the eldest child of the late Justine Sanders Smith of Orangeburg and Forrest Stanmore Smith of Saluda. She attended Shenandoah Music Conservatory in West Virginia and worked for many years as a legal assistant with her late husband Daniel Marchant Culler, an Orangeburg attorney, magistrate and real estate developer. One of Mrs. Culler's major contributions to her community was the completion of her husband's history "Orangeburgh District, History and Records: 1768-1868," which she co-edited, the fulfillment of a long-held dream and promise. She was a charter member of the Orangeburg Music Club, a member of the Prince of Orange DAR, and a member of the Orangeburg League of the Arts, where she actively volunteered for many years, as well as being an active member of the Orangeburg Historical Society for many years. She assisted in the research and erection of many local historical markers, including the one by the Edisto Bridge, the Thomas Worth Glover home, and Orangeburg's pioneer cemetery. As a member of the historical society, she chaired the renovation of the Dixie Club and was active in the procurement of the lot and the building of the Orangeburg Archives. She was for many years an active member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir. Mrs. Culler was first married to the late Robert Washington Hundley and was the widow of the late Daniel Marchant Culler of Orangeburg. She was predeceased by her grandson Daniel Marchant Hundley of Charleston and her six siblings, Catherine Smith Cox of Millen, Ga., Reba Smith Moorer of Columbia, Miriam Smith Bennet of Goldsboro, N.C., Forrest Stanmore Smith Jr. and John Jacob Smith, both of Orangeburg, and Mortimer Fenton Smith of Cayce and Atlanta, Ga.
