Justus (Jud)Canfield a resident of the city for sixty-seven years among the first of its pioneers., a postal and post office employee of the early days and a veteran of the civil war, is dead. Mr. Canfield who was 86 years old died at the home of his daughter Mrs. Nerl L. Mershon, 897 West Church street, at 8 O'clock Wednesday night. Death was caused by infirmities of age. Mr. Canfield had been feeble for years and had been confined to his bed most of the time since last September. He had lived with his daughter since the death of Mrs. Julia Canfield, July 19, 1913. Mr. Canfield came to this city in 1854 and had lived continuously except for four years and eight months during his service in the civil war in which he had an interesting career and was advanced from private to captain. Mr. Canfield enlisted at Green Mountain, Iowa in 1861 in the second Iowa Calvary. He was advanced to be a sergeant and came to the attention of General Grant following the battle of Shiloh in 1862 by his valiant act of capturing six poisoners unaided. Sergeant Canfield was relived of his duty and assigned to the staff of General Roscrans as a dispatcher bearer during the siege of Corinth. He was severely injured in Mississippi in July 1862 when his horse was shot from under him and fell upon him. He served thought the campaign of the western army and was commissioned a lieutenant in 1864 and assigned to command Battery E. United States heavy artillery , colored. In October 1866 he resigned and returned home but, was commissioned a captain an honor he resigned because he wanted to remain home. Mr. Canfield is credited with being the originator of the plan of distributing mail while en route on trains. This incident was i 1862 on the M&O between Columbus Junction, Ky. and Grand Junction Tenn. Canfield than a private submitted his plan of distributing mail to Brigadier General Hamilton. The plan was adopted, a car was equipped and Canfield was placed in charge. This plan continued to be used until the army came to Memphis. Mail previously had been carried on rail roads and in box cars but had not been distributed while being moved causing long delays in distribution at junction points and terminals. Coming here with his parents young Canfield procured work with a contractor who was erecting a saw mill for Henry Anson, the first saw mill of it's kind built here. When the Iowa central railroad was opened, he was appointed a mail route clerk and remained in the service for six years. He left it to enter the post office here under E.N. Chapin, the postmaster. Mr. Canfield was born in Susquehanna Pennsylvania, March 7, 1835. His parents were Andrew & Loraine Canfield, who brought thier son with them West to Knox County Ill.. In 1844 and to this city the next year. Me canfield was untied in marriage her to Julia A. Bibb, Oct. 7, 1857. they were parents of three children Nora, George and Mrs. Mershon. The first two named died when small. Mr. canfield was the last surviving member in his family. He held membership in the G.R.A. and was an old member of Mason and belong to the Eastern Star and the Methodist Church. 2nd great uncle
