Read More	Justus Hampel (also known as Gus or Gust) was born 21 July 1855 in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. He was the eldest of five children born to Jacob and Catharine (Gerlach) Hampel. They lived near Hazelton, where Jacob was a miner, during the Civil War, and in 1868 moved to LaSalle County, Illinois near Streater. In 1870, the family moved to Noble Township in Cass County, Iowa. Justus was employed several years by Hugh Crawford near Lewis, and later bought a farm 1 and ¾ miles east of Lyman. His sister, Catharine, kept house for him after he decided he was not meant to be a cook. Justice (sic) married Hedwig Theresa Schmidt on 2 February 1886, and five daugenhters (sic) were born to this couple in the next six years. His wife died in 1890 (sic), shortly after the birth and death of a son. Justus' parents moved in with him to help care for the five little daughters. He was remarried on 6 February 1896 to Emma Mueller. He was 41 and she was 21 years of age. They had one son and a daughter. It was a rough winter when Justus lost his first son – that he wanted so much – and his wife, of childbirth infection, within a week. He lost all of his hogs with cholera, and the girls had scarlet fever. Justus had 160 acres, and was an industrious farmer, raising winter wheat, corn, and oats as well as potatoes by the wagonload. The latter was scooped into a chute which emptied into the cellar. These potatoes would be carried by the bushels from the cellar to the ‘slop house,' which had an iron kettle and a well. The potatoes were cooked in the kettle, mixed with ground corn from a barrel. This made a mash for the pigs. In the summertime, the mixture was not cooked – just soaked. In the summer, that well was the refrigeration. Butter, cream, and milk would be lowered into it, and would get as cold as if it where (sic) coming from a modern refrigerator. German was spoken in Justus' home, and when Marie (Molly) started to school, she knew not one word of English. When Justus remarried, English was spoken from then on, for his second wife spoke plattdeutsch (Low German) which he could not understand. Around 1911, Justus built a two-story home which had a porch around two sides. A housewarming dance was held in July of that year. Louis Smith (Justus' granddaughter) was the first child born in that house. Justus died at the Clarinda State Hospital on 3 March 1932 (sic), and is buried in St. John's Cemetery, one mile south of Lyman. (Source: Jacob Hampel 1833-1915 and Catharine Gerlach 1826-1904.
